Associate Professor at UTP AP. Dr. David Menier: Marine geological evolution influence
ecosystems
Evolution process which have been run for thousands year able to change ecosystems. The
change sometimes beneficial and sometimes do not, especially for local species, due to its
competitiveness. A France Marine Geologist, AP. Dr. David Menier mentioned this in front of
students of Fisheries and Marine Science Faculty Universitas Brawijaya (FPIK-UB) on Thursday
(27/12). On the time, he presented guest lecture about marine geology evolution into students
either bachelor or post-graduate.
Since the last 15 years, Menier has deepened this research on France coast especially. This
marine geology expert, recently is a lecturer at Universiti Teknologi Petronas and trusted by
Malaysia to compile a Present-Day Carbonate Platform in Sabah.
One thing he has been concern with is sea level rising which according to him, also a universal
problem. Polar ice melting, as an effect of global climate change, also fasten the phenomena
which this long time been happened in thousands year. Although both are similarly in sea level
rising, yet geology evolution is different from tsunami. Aceh Tsunami (9.3 Richter Scale) on 26th
December 2004 for instance, has swept up to 800 m seashore on 4-34 m tidal.
Menier who is also a lecturer in University of Southern Brittany France emphasized that coast
line always change every day. The change not only related to sea level rising but also its
morphology. Therefore, according to him, France decided to reduce people's activities in the
seashore. "Due to economic consideration, those activities is not directly discontinued," Menier
affirmed. One of its indication is continuously declination of property values along coast area.
After delivered guest lecture at FPIK, Menier visited Central Laboratory of Life Sciences (LSIH)
afterwards. The visit is received by LSIH Director, Prof. Ir. Yenny Risjani, DEA, Ph.D. On the
time he looked at many infrastructures available there. Yenny explained, there are also facilities
which able to be used for geology research such as Confocal Laser Scanning Microscope
(CLSM). [nok]
