The polar nature of water
means that it’s a good solvent for many substances like ionic compounds and other polar
molecules such as sugars and amino acids.
Water is colorless and light can penetrate through it
Aquatic plants can still photosynthesize in deeper water
Adhesion and cohesion
Water can climb high in xylem, adhesion allows a chain of water to climb
through the plant
Thermal properties: high specific heat
T
Can absorb a lot of heat with little raise in temp.. allows organisms to
maintain stable internal temperature
The solvent property allows glucose to be transported around the body
Thermal properties: high specific heat
Water absorbs a lot of heat energy before it evaporates, allowing sweating
to regulate body temps.
Ice is less dense than water
Insulates aquatic environments during the winter allowing lakes and ponds
to remain at liquid temps providing habitat to aquatic life.
