Ladder up to roof to inspect area of work Ladder may slip to one side or away from building Secure ladder to roof edge. Have ladder one-third ladder height from building. 2 Decide what equipment and materials are needed to do the job Materials may be toxic Know potential danger and hazards of material (WHMIS data) 3 Materials up onto roof Falling of equipment, materials and muscle strains Require proper hoisting equipment to raise material and tools to roof 3 Barricade work area 4 Secure safety line to anchor or other security Personnel may slip due to wet, icy, slippery conditions Once on roof, anchor to roof anchor or suitable anchorage 5 Hot application (torch on) Possibilities of burns from propane torch and hot materials (tar adhesive) Wear long sleeved shirts, long legged pants, gloves. Daily inspect all propane torches, connections, hoses, etc. for safe operation Fire WHMIS data and fire extinguisher on site 5 6 Cold application Possibility of caustic burns, toxic fumes Wear gloves, long sleeved shirts, long legged pants (WHMIS data) 7 Working near roof edge Possibility of falling over edge Within 6' of edge, safety harness lanyard on to life line anchor or other security. Use of guard railing or barrier, scaffolding erected to proper height with safety railing anchored or supported by out riggers above. Use of scaffolding being anchored or secured properly with guardrail. Use gloves. 9 Shingling Potential of slipping or falling off roof or falling through roof Use of safety harness, lanyard safety line to anchor along with use of toe board 10 Sloped roof (metal) Slipping and falling from roof, metal Use of safety harness, lanyard (Fall Arrest) safety line to anchor or suitable security 11 Sloped roof (asbestos) Slipping and falling from roof, asbestos Use of safety harness, lanyard (Fall Arrest) safety line to anchor or suitable security. Follow Division Asbestos Policy. 12 Fixed ladder (access to roof) Slipping or falling because of accidental or ladder condition Check ladder condition, overall construction, welding, security to building. Climb ladder properly, 3 point contact i.e. 2 feet - 1 hand, 2 hands - 1 foot etc. Never carry tools and/or material up or down a ladder. 13 Access through roof hatches Potential to fall off ladder or through hatch from roof Make sure area around ladder is clear of debris. Make sure safety rail is up. Once on roof place guard rail around hatch or close lid. 14 All roof work using power tools, drills, sawzall, quickie saw, submersible pumps Potential cuts, electric shock, burns Check all electrical cords, extension cords, ground and tools in ge--neral first. Check all fluid levels.
