The minutes of the meeting held on 3 December 2013 were
MATTERS ARISING:
Calderdale Health Forum - written report included with minutes. The main agreed action
points for the PPG were:
- Provisional minutes and agenda for next meeting could be put on website earlier
to give people a chance to read and comment on them; and an area could be set
up where any patient could contribute their views (as this could lead to lots more
admin work for the surgery staff, it was agreed to trial it, if possible).
- Get more information (from CCG newsletter to surgery, and from Healthwatch
Calderdale) about topics/issues that are current or being raised – so these can be
discussed at our meetings.
- Push Calderdale Health Forum to send out a questionnaire to all surgeries to get
information about the services they provide, issues/problems/successes they
have so that groups can learn from one another.
PROJECTS FOR THIS YEAR
Surgery use of 0844 number
The practice now has a landline and this appears to be working well. The 0844 will finish
shortly and be replaced with an additional landline. Julie Humphreys is looking at the 0844
contract and talking with the providers about providing similar features on a normal
landline. Information about the new landline number is on the website, on prescriptions
and on a notice in the waiting room. Texts are gradually being sent to mobile phones
regarding the new number (no block texts are being sent as the surgery does not want the
new number to be overwhelmed – more lines will be provided when the 0844 contract
ends).
Repeat prescriptions
The surgery is pushing the use of the internet and the repeat prescriptions box for getting
such prescriptions and use of the latter is increasing.
Anthony Campbell has contacted local pharmacists and they now have notices up about
repeat prescription services they provide, and this information has been displayed on the
screen in the surgery.
Surgery will put up a notice on the screen reminding patients to get repeat prescriptions in
time.
Anthony will get forms from chemists about repeat prescription services and staple them to
prescriptions.
Other surgeries have implemented electronic repeat prescriptions but, at least some, have
encountered problems with this system – Station Road is not going to implement such a
system until teething problems have been sorted out by other users.
DNA (did not attend for appointment) figures
DNAs have been reduced from 8-12% to 5-8% over the last year. Whether or not patients
have a mobile phone (and hence get text reminders) does not seem to effect the DNA rate.
It is possible to include a ‘cancel appointment’ option on the text reminder but this has not
been tried yet – Anthony is investigating the possibility of implementing this.
Flu jab uptake
The flu jab uptake figures were not as good as last year – all GPs are now pushing it when
relevant patients attend. In most categories take up rates were near the Calderdale figures,
except for the ‘all age 3’ group – one possible reason for this was that patients/parents
were wary of the new nasal-spray vaccine (which replaced the traditional injection).
The practice is considering what to do differently next year to help promote the uptake of
flu jabs.
Information about Health Care organisations
The diagram has been given to the Calderdale Health Forum - awaiting a response.
Diabetes projects
Dr Catlow attended one of the educational days run by the Diabetes team at Huddersfield
(covering the Desmond program for diabetics and their partners). Out of 32 patients invited
to the program 16 did not attend. Dr Catlow will run a project at the surgery (on Tuesday 18
March) focussing on these 16, including why they chose not to attend. He will report back
to the next meeting on how this goes. The surgery will also promote Desmond Day (which
has run for about 6 years).
It was suggested that the surgery website has an update about the latest information about
diabetes, that possibly a forum/self-help group could be set up. Apparently there is a selfhelp group/forum that meets once a month at the Maurice Jagger Centre – Mike
Richardson will find out more information and pass it on to the surgery – it can then be
advertised in the surgery.
FUNDING/POSSIBLE FUNDING FOR PPG
No progress in getting funds - it is likely in future that grants (if/when available) will only be
for specific projects with specified outcomes.
ANY OTHER BUSINESS
It was asked if more interesting/cheerful art works could be displayed in the waiting room.
Car parking – Lawrence Orgee will contact the prospective councillors about this issue.
