Design description: This study focused on fish fauna of Inle Lake, a representative ancient lake in mainland Southeast Asia, which so far has not been investigated much for a century (Annandale 1918), and hoped to comprehend the current status. Especially, we focused on the condition of endemic species as the environments have been drastically changed (Su and Jassby 2000) and alien species recently settled in the lake (Davies et al. 2004, Oo 2010). As information about fish species of Inle Lake is quite poor, almost all the specimens were taken photos in raw condition. The photo data are available from an online database Fishes of Mainland Southeast Asia (Kano et al. 2013) (http://ffish.asia/INLE2016). CT/3D models are also available from the database (http://ffish.asia/INLE2016-3D). The voucher specimens were deposited at Kasetsart University. As well as keeping the main body for formalin sample, a small piece of tissue (mainly from the right pectoral or pelvic fin) was excised, preserved in 99% alcohol and stored at Kyoto University to facilitate the study of molecular biology and genetics later. Next, they were cleaned with water and preserved in 70% alcohol. Study extent description: The surveys were carried out from 2014 to 2016 in aquatic environments and local markets, which were associated with Inle Lake, of Shan State and Kayah State of Myanmar. Sampling description: The fish samples were collected and purchased at 44 wild habitats, 25 local markets, and 1 fish-cage put in the lake. In the wild, the fishes were collected by hand-nets, throwing nets, traps, and/or purchasing from fishermen. In the markets, we avoided to purchase the obvious cultured fishes from other areas (especially from Yangon and Mandalay), such as Wallago spp. and Pangasianodon hypophthalmus, by interviewing the seller. Quality control description: All the scientific names of fish samples were validated by the updated fish checklist in the Catalogue of Fishes, California Academy of Sciences (http://www.calacademy.org/scientists/projects/catalog-of-fishes) and/or Kottelat 2013. Most of the specimens were photographed in fresh (Kano and Nakajima 2014), and then the formalin specimens and its tissue samples were catalogued and deposited at Faculty of Fisheries, Kasetsart University, Bangkok, Thailand (RLIKU) and Kyoto University, Kyoto, Japan, respectively.
