Real World Impacts of Stormwater on Municipal Operations
8:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Is the money we spend to protect our surface waters really worthwhile? Does the quality of stormwater runoff really
matter locally? How much does it cost to ensure safe drinking water? This workshop will help answer those questions,
and will demonstrate how the City of St. Cloud’s Public Utilities (Stormwater, Drinking Water, Hydroelectric, and
Wastewater Treatment) interact with each other and the impacts stormwater runoff has on each. Attendees will learn
how stormwater impacts the cost of delivering safe drinking water to the public. Drinking water treatment techniques
will be discussed and how these concepts can carry into stormwater treatment practices. A tour of the City’s state of the
art water treatment facility will show you first-hand what it takes to produce safe drinking water from the Mississippi
River. You will also learn how the City is meeting MS4 permit requirements, its use of a stormwater utility fee and the
costs to implement programs aimed at reducing the impacts to City’s other utilities.
