Civics Lesson Plans Unit 4 Week 2 November 9-13 (The sequencing in the lesson plan is only a guide. It frequently changes. It is important for absent students to discuss missed assignments with the teacher upon their return) Description: This unit focuses on examining how citizens can participate responsibly and effectively in American civic and political life. Objectives: The student will: Discuss the roles and responsibilities of citizens and government in a democratic society Explain the basic principles of American government Explain citizens (both individually and collectively) influence government policy Discuss how an individual can make a difference Distinguish between fact and opinion Explain competing ideas about the purpose of politics in government Compare and contrast the different propaganda techniques Explain how public opinion influences governmental decisions Discuss how our two-party system works Compare and contrast the two major parties Compare and contrast the different political philosophies Identify and discuss the role of third-parties Discuss the election process GLE’s: C.1.1, C.5.1, C.5.2, C.5.3, C.5.4, C.5.5, C.5.6, C.5.7 November 9th Topic: What are some positives that come from political parties? Explain. PowerPoint Presentation on Political Parties (Slides 1-8) Students will receive notes on Unit 4. The students will work with partners and complete a worksheet “5 Roles of Political Parties & The US Two-Party System” The student will complete vocabulary terms. November 10th Topic: What are some negatives that come from political parties? Explain. PowerPoint Presentation on Political Parties (Slides 9-14) The students will complete worksheet “Party Systems Strengths & Weaknesses” The students will complete vocabulary terms. November 11th Topic: According to the graph, what do most Republicans and Democrats believe in? Watch a short video on the history of voting. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gdlXdehi0Sg PowerPoint Presentation on “Voting” (Slides 1-9) The students will complete an Instagram worksheet, illustrating why it is important to vote. The students will illustrate a picture and must have a comment along with the illustration. November 12th Topic: Based on the chart, what are some differences regarding the Supreme Court? Explain why. PowerPoint Presentation on “Voting” (Slides 10-18) The students will complete their Instagram worksheet and will present their pictures. The students will complete a “Voter Registration Form” to show them how they need to register to vote when they do. November 13th Topic: What is your opinion of voting? Should everyone have to vote? Explain. Group activity on Voting Rights The students will have to complete a worksheet. The worksheet will discuss the different groups that were allowed to vote through our nation’s history. The worksheet will also give a scenario of an individual in a time period and the group will have to state whether the individual can vote or not. Each group will be given that specific group and will have to create an illustration and slogan about the group not having the right to vote.
