Why did Lincoln risk war by resupplying Fort Sumter?
Political move-Since they were running
out of supplies, he needed to do something,
so he wouldn’t look like he was giving into
the rebels (he decided to send supplies
instead).
2. How did states in the upper South respond to Lincoln’s call-up of the militia?
With anger—and VA, NC, TN, AR—all
seceded & became part of the
Confederacy.
Border states remained as part of the
Union but still were slave states- MO, KY,
MD & DE. (Western part of VA sided with
Union and broke away to stay with the
North-becoming a new state in 1863!)
3. How did Virginia’s decision to secede improve the South’s chances of winning?
VA= wealthy state, heavily populated.
Confederate capital put in Richmond, VA.
Major player for Confederacy= Robert E.
Lee- trained at West Point & opposed
slavery and leaving the Union-but torn b/c
VA was his birthplace- so he joins
Confederate army.
4. What did the Confederacy hope to gain by withholding cotton from the market?
Cotton was king---it provided Europe most
of its cotton!!
Europe afraid of being cut off, so South
believed France & Britain would be forced
to provide South with much needed aid to
their cause---but it backfired--- b/c Europe
had surplus cotton!!
5. What was the goal of the Anaconda Plan, and what were its drawbacks?
 Naval blockade of South’s coastline
cutting off supplies
 Gain control of MS River to split
Confederacy in two
 Negative: time consuming to implement
NORTH
Reasons for
fighting
Advantages
Lincoln never recognized
Confederacy- just viewed as
rebels of the Union.
Goal- to preserve the Union
More PPL- 22 Million
More resources: nation’s
factories in North;
More RR, shipyards-naval
power. Larger armies & the
SOUTH
Saw war as a way to defend
their rights as states
9 Million PPL (3.5 M- slaves)
Many of the best officers in
U.S. Army!
Robert E. Lee- great leader
ppl to make weapons in
factories!
Pres. Lincoln-great leader
More $$$ in North
Disadvantages
Military
Strategy
Battle
Victories
Had a reason to fight-had
heart!!
All but 2 battles in Southhome field advantage!
Better military advantage
Only 2 battles fought in Northso Union had to transport
Lack of resources-mostly farm
men, weapons & supplies to
lands, few RR & limited $$$
the South
Began as a defensive war- but
ANACONDA PLAN- squeeze
soon becomes an offensive
the South by cutting off its
war.
resources via naval blockade Wanted independence- to be
on Atlantic Ocean, gain
left alone to do what was in
control of MS River & take
the best interest of the
control of South’s capital in
southern economy
Richmond, VA.
Battle of Shiloh (TN)
Fort Sumter (SC)-starts war
Battle of Antietam (MD)-N
Bloodiest Day in war
1st Battle of Bull
Run/Manassas (7/1861)
(VA)- near Washington, D.C.
Siege of Vicksburg (MS)
Battle of Gettysburg (PA)-N
Turning point of the war &
highest casualties
Battle of Atlanta (GA)
Sherman’s March to the Sea
NAVAL Battle: (Ironclads)Monitor (Union) v. Virginia
(Confederacy)-1862/a draw
1ST great battle of the CW
that brought brutality of war
to life. Nearly 4700 KIA!!
Lincoln responded to this
defeat by enlisting 500K to
serve 3 yrs.-instead of 3 mos.
Three days later-he called for
another 500K men &
appointed General George
McClellan to lead the one
Million men.
H.L.Hunley- Confederacy subsank the U.S.S. Housatonic on 2nd Battle of Bull Run (8/1862)
Feb. 17, 1864
25K KIA in 2nd battle
BORDER States (Part of the
Union-but owned slaves):
Battle of Fredericksburg (VA)
DE, MO, KY & MD
Battle of Petersburg (VA)
Most destructive conflict in American history600K-700K (some experts believe closer to 700K) died
About same # killed in ALL other U.S. wars COMBINED through the Gulf War in
20th Century.
100s of 1,000s more were wounded!! (about 12.5%)
When it was over 4 years later, the South lay in ruins.
The Civil War made slavery illegal in U.S. - but it did NOT END racism!
