Fiction – Deeper Meaning Terms
Learning Targets: I can…
-distinguish a story’s theme (deeper meaning) and demonstrate – with specific examples of how
it develops throughout the story
-define foreshadowing and identify its use in a story
-distinguish how specific words in a story create the author’s tone and voice (style)
-explain how conflict (internal or external) impacts the characters in a story
-identify irony in a story and explain why a situation is ironic
-distinguish imagery and explain the impact it has on a story
The deeper meaning is the why of the story. Why did the author make certain choices
and how can we reflect on the story more meaningfully? ***When you write a reflection,
you should focus more on the deeper meaning of the story, using specific examples and
quotations to explain your ideas.
