Installing guest operating systems on VMWare and Linux Kernel-based
Virtual Machine (KVM) virtual servers
Prerequisites:
Make sure that you have met the following prerequisites before you complete the steps in this quick
start guide:

An IBM Flex System Manager management node is installed in a chassis and is managing the devices
in that chassis, which include one or more compute nodes that have been discovered by the IBM
Flex System Manager management node. For more information, see the following quick start
guides:
o Installing the IBM Flex System Enterprise Chassis
o Configuring components of the IBM Flex System Enterprise Chassis
o Configuring the IBM Flex System Manager management node
o Selecting one or more chassis to be managed in the IBM Flex Systems Manager domain or
Adding a chassis to an existing Flex System Manager management domain

You have installed a hypervisor on the compute node and have created at least one virtual server on
the compute node. For information about creating a virtual server, see the Creating a virtual server
quick start guide.
Steps:
Follow the steps in this document to install operating systems on VMware and RHEL KVM virtual servers.
Installing guest operating systems on VMware virtual servers
Complete the following steps install a quest operating system on VMware virtual servers:
1. Login into vCenter.
2. Install the guest operating system, as follows:

For Linux on VMware, refer to Installing and Configuring Linux Guest Operating Systems for
more information.

For Windows on VMware, refer to Example: Installing Windows XP as a Guest Operating System
for more information.
Installing guest operating systems on Linux Kernel-based Virtual Machine
(KVM) virtual servers
To install a quest operating system on a KVM virtual server, follow the steps in the Installing guest
operating systems on Linux Kernel-based Virtual Machine (KVM) virtual servers quick start guide, which
is located in Table 3. Advanced virtualization tasks.
