Otowi Bridge Chapter Nominee
REGION 7 VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR AWARD
John Jones, 2013 VP of Programs
Region 7 consists of New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, California, and Hawaii with a total of 17
Chapters. The winner will be sent, all expenses paid by PMI, to participate in this year’s PMI
Region 7 Leadership Summit in Las Vegas, Nevada, and be recognized by her / his peers.
On behalf of the 2013 Otowi Bridge Chapter, we would like to recognize, honor, and nominate
John Jones as our outstanding 2013 volunteer who demonstrated measurable commitment and
leadership in support of our 2013 Programs. John demonstrated outstanding innovation and
enthusiasm in developing a diverse approach to the Otowi Bridge Chapter Programs
management with overwhelming success.
John reached out to the membership to find out what “they” wanted and he took the innovative
initiative to address the Memberships’ wishes by alternating our lunch time meetings,
introducing off-site dinner meetings, arranging high quality presenters and a variety of
presentations, which drew additional interest from other communities. Our membership was
down from 106 in 2011 to 101 in 2012 and we know that John’s energy and enhanced
approach to our Programs had a significant impact on our membership growing to 111 in
2013. A 10% increase is significant progress in one year!
The November 7, 2013, the 1st International Project Management Day event was the
innovative idea of John Jones. John was the key driver and one of the coordinators (working
jointly and successfully with the Rio Grande Chapter) to make this event a reality. The event
was an overwhelming success that significantly over exceeded the target and unfortunately
people had to be turned away because of room size constraints. The event provided an
outstanding value of $150 for 8 PDUs, a wide variety of topics, and excellent speakers
contributed to the success.
John established a successful collaboration with the Rio Grande Chapter by which we now
jointly support and engage in both Chapters’ events through joint communications, marketing,
and advertising. For example, Otowi Bridge Chapter and Rio Grande Chapter joined for a
Dinner & Networking Meeting in Albuquerque, NM, and Tim Jerome, Rio Grande Chapter
President-Elect, presented at the Otowi Bridge Chapter Lunch Meeting in Los Alamos, NM.
However, the outstanding collaboration was the successful joint effort with Rio Grande
Chapter to coordinate the 1st International Project Management Day on November 7, 2013, in
Albuquerque, NM. Preliminary discussions have begun regarding the 2nd International Project
Management Day, which will be co-hosted by both Chapters because John took the initiative
to reach out to the Rio Grande Chapter.
John Jones
John’s background in both private and public sector IT-related projects across the US
and Canada have created a wide variety of project and program management opportunities and
experiences. In the San Francisco Bay Area John was a member of three different chapters
and gained broad PMI practical knowledge following his 2006 PMP certification. John has
volunteered in California and most recently in New Mexico, not only for the Otowi Bridge
Chapter as 2013 VP of Programs, but also as President for NM-GMIS (New MexicoGovernment Management Information Sciences, an international IT-related non-profit
organization) and teaches project management and public sector management tactics for
NMEDGE (New Mexico Education Designed to Generate Excellence). John was instrumental
in developing the 1st IPMD and reaching out to the Rio Grande Chapter as well as the
NMGMIS to provide more collaborative events within New Mexico. John received his BA at
California State University, East Bay, and is currently enrolled in the CGCIO (Certified
Government Chief Information Officer) program at the University of North Carolina (distance
learning certification).
