Frankenstein Final Essay (timed writing)
Discuss ONE of the following topics in an essay where you defend your thesis using specific
information from Shelley’s Frankenstein. You have the entire period to develop and defend your
thesis.
Requirements:
The essay should adhere to the following format:





Introductory paragraph which includes a clear and focused thesis.
o Make sure to use the funnel down method
Thesis must be underlined
Three body paragraphs which develop your thesis
Underline the topic sentence in each paragraph
Concluding paragraph where you revisit your thesis and leave the reader with something to
think about
Topics:
1.
Morally ambiguous characters—characters whose behavior discourages readers from
identifying them as purely evil or purely good—are at the heart of many works of literature.
Looking back at Frankenstein, choose a morally ambiguous character that plays a pivotal role.
Then write an essay in which you explain how the character can be viewed as morally
ambiguous and why his or her moral ambiguity is significant to the work as a whole. Avoid
plot summary.
2. Choose a complex and important character from Mary Shelley’s novel, Frankenstein, who
might—on the basis of the character’s actions alone—be considered evil or immoral. In a
well-organized essay, explain both how and why the full presentation of the character in the
work makes us react more sympathetically than we otherwise might. Avoid plot summary.

Looking back at Frankenstein, choose a morally ambiguous character that plays a pivotal role

character can be viewed as morally ambiguous and why his or her moral ambiguity is
significant to the work as a whole. Avoid plot summary.
2. Choose a complex and important character from Mary Shelley’s novel, Frankenstein, who
