A LARGE TURNOUT This month the turnout for the Royal British Golfing Society’s competition to play for the Royal British Club Cup was one of the largest we have had this year, with 38 players and 52 for lunch including many guests. On a beautiful hot day without the winds we have had for the last few days only one player managed to play to his handicap: Hans Muhlenbeck was the winner with 36 points. The following players – all four of them – scored 35 points which resulted in a multiple countback. The final results were: Ron Goddard second, Sally Buxton third, Mark Dawson fourth, Miranda Thomas fifth, 6th place went to Hans Ludolphi with 34 points. Philip Portel, as Chairman of the RBC, presented the prizes to the above six winners plus awarding the Newstead Cup – for players with a handicap of 19 or over– to Sakiko Takeda. The Nearest the Pin prizes, for the Men went to Ron Goddard and for the Ladies to Sakiko Takeda. This month’s hard fought for Cow Bell was won by David Jackson. Lunch was served in the Diningroom of the Estoril Club House – due to the large numbers we were unable to lunch on the terrace – during which Philip Portel gave a short speech on Portugal’s old golf courses with connections to England. Captain Selwyn Kennard announced that the next competition will be on 2nd October when, in the absence of a sponsor, a ‘Captain’s Day’ will be held.
