Standard level one and half hour. Higher level two hours. Students are allowed to

1. Explain why Germany and her allies were defeated in the First world war and assess
their treatment in the 1918/1919 peace settlement.
2. What do you understand by the term appeasement? How far was appeasement
responsible for the outbreak of the war in 1939.
3. To what extent should Germany be held responsible for causing both the First and the
Second world wars?
4. “Each war has its own particular causes”. Is this the case or can evidence be given that
twentieth century wars have common causes? Support your answer with evidence from
World War I and World War II.
5. To what extent has any twentieth century war changed the role of women.
6. Have military alliances provoked or prevented war in the twentieth century?

Answer one of the following (20 marks).
1. In 1867 Bismarck said: “Anyone who has looked into the eyes of a soldier dying on the
battlefield will think hard before starting a war.” Analyse Bismarcks foreign policy in the
light of these words.
2. To what extent were Bismarcks successes due to the mistakes of his opponents?
3. “No man has had so great an effect on Germany and none a more profound effect on
Europe.” Evaluate this quotation on the carrier and importance of Bismarck.
