Conjunctions
Used to join words or groups of words. The acronym FANBOYS is often used to help
people remember the 7 most common conjunctions (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so). There
are three types of conjunctions: coordinating (used to connect words and phrases of
equal status), correlative (two-part conjunctions, such as either/or, neither/nor,
both/and, not only/but also, etc.), and subordinating (used to create dependent clauses).

Interjections
Words used to express feeling or emotions. They function independently from the rest of
a sentence and are separated from the rest of the sentence by a comma or an exclamation

Informative Essay
Americanism Essay sponsored by the local Fleet Reserve Association
Students must compose a 300-35o word informative essay which explores the topic of
"What Memorial Day Means." The essay is a class requirement for the students' writing
portfolios and as a cross-curricular grade for both my and Mr. Weyant's classes. However,
participation in the actual essay contest is voluntary. This means that every student will be
required to complete an essay, but not every student has to have their essay submitted for
contest consideration. For contest rules and procedures, students can ask me for an essay
contest handout form which will cover this information. Essay Contest submissions were
due December 1st, 2016.

Animal Farm (1954) URL
This is the animated film version of Animal Farm from 1954. It is unrated in the US, as it
was originally a British film production; however, the rating it has received in other
countries is the American equivalent of a G rating, which is the rating that most animated
children's films receive. For more information about the contents of the film, check out the
Parents Guide on IMDB.
o
o
The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux (translated by Lowell
Bair)
Phantom of the Opera: Fact or Fiction? URL
An interesting article that explains the true elements and events that inspired the amazing
novel by Gaston Leroux (WARNING: Spoilers!)
o
The Phantom of the Opera (1925) URL
This is the Lon Chaney version of the film. Its television rating was TV-G. It is a silent film
with caption screens to show the characters' words, so this is a completely different style of
film than most people will be used to. Be aware that, just as in the book, there are some
scary scenes in the film, but nothing depicted is graphic in nature. For a more detailed
breakdown of the contents of the film, check out the Parents Guide on IMDB. Enjoy!
