Anatomy & Physiology for Myomassologists
Urinary System
Description:
Functions of the Urinary System:
 Removal of wastes from the blood
 Regulates the content of blood
 Regulates blood pressure
 maintains water and pH balances
The Kidneys:
Located; superior to the waist, retro-peritoneal plane, between
T12 & L3
Internal Structure –
Renal Cortex – outer layer
Renal medulla – inner layer
Pyramids – divisions of the medulla
Nephron – the ‘filter’
Renal pelvis – beginning of the ureter
Urine formation:
Glomerular filtration –
Tubular reabsorption –
Tubular secretion –
Ureters – Drain urine from the kidneys to the urinary bladder
Urinary Bladder – stores urine before voiding
Urethra – duct/passageway from bladder out of the body.
