Math History – The Early Greeks and the
Pythagoreans
The fifth in a series of math history seminars, this seminar will focus
on the beginnings of Greek mathematics, primarily looking at the
Pythagoreans. The Pythagorean society combined mathematics and
theology into a philosophy that governed the way they lived. The
Pythagorean doctrines had a powerful impact over many centuries in mathematics, philosophy, music, astronomy, and architecture. We
will investigate Pythagorean mathematics and philosophy and their
influence, and also discuss Thales, Plato, and Aristotle.
