ANCIENT GREEK Infomercials Persuasive ESSAYs The Legend of Zeus' Replacement Mr. RosenfelD 6th Grade Gifted and Talented Dever Howell Wheeler Willow Podcast Recordings – March 29, 2016 All Written Work, Posters & Actual Video Recordings – April 5, 2016 Ancient Greece Persuasive Essays The story …..And it came to pass that Zeus, the chief of the ancient Greek Gods, (Long may he rein) decided that he grew tired of being in charge. He was most displeased with the constant nagging, bickering and fighting and fighting, bickering and nagging of his divine family on top of Mount Olympus. The oracle advised Zeus (Long may he rein) that he should retire and move to Florida in order to enjoy the bounty of the sunshine state's beaches, fishing, year-round amusement parks and early-bird specials. Besides, it's a good way to get away from all the afore mentioned nagging, bickering and fighting. This news, of course, shocked the rest of the deities of Mount Olympus (Long may they also reign) because Zeus decided not to name his successor. Zeus decreed that each of the Gods, Goddesses and heroes should use their persuasive abilities and powers (In the classic Greek tradition) as well as late-night cable television to convince the mortals who their new ruler should be. That divine being will be given Zeus’ thunderbolts, powers and Lego to rule over the universe for eternity. Your job is to become one of the ancient Greek gods, goddesses or heroes and try to become the eternal ruler of Olympus. You are required to: ( ) Research and study your deity in order to become that legend! ( ) Prepare and memorize a full one minute long typed speech, in the voice of your character, to convince the worshiping mortals of your qualifications. (12 pt. Times New Roman Font with one-inch margins) ( ) Deliver your speech, in costume, dressed as the god, goddess or hero you are claiming to be. ( ) Part of your speech requires you to provide a series of visuals that will appear while you are talking to champion your cause. You must use a minimum of five (easy to see and to understand) photos within your oneminute infomercial. But WAIT! There’s more….. ( ) Create a campaign poster (on oak tag) explaining why you deserve the honor. Include what you will to those who vote for and against you. Have some artistic fun with this, but stay true to your character. ( ) Create a sixty second radio ad that will be shared via your poster using a QR code. I will record this with you during class on podcasting equipment. This ad is not your actual typed speech. ( ) Submit a (One-Page) typed resume (A document listing your qualifications for a job) Your mortal name should be on top of it. I will explain how to do this in class – though a sample is attached. ( ) Submit a formal TYPED works cited page, correctly listing where you obtained the information about your character. This is required in 12 pt. Times New Roman Font. You will need a minimum of three text sources and three on-line sources. ( ) You will also need a cover page for your submitted work. The order of your submission should be: Cover Page, Speech, Resume and Works Cited Page. They should be stapled together and presented to Mr. Rosenfeld as you prepare to record your speech during the video recording. Students will be assigned their parts as soon as possible. We will be filming our infomercials on Tuesday, April 5, 2016. The podcasts will be recorded on March 29, 2016. Some class time will be used for research, artwork, recording, costumes, etc. Good luck to all...May the fates be with you! Perseus Dionysus Apollo Hermes Cronus Hephaestus Hera Aphrodite Athena Themis Gaea Persephone Demeter Artemis Muses Rhea Hestia WEAKNESS If water covers ¾ of the land, why aren’t you already in control. Very powerful, but is totally in love with his wife, Persephone. Will do anything and everything to please her. (He is not his own man.) The ruler of war always loses in battle to Athena. He is really a coward. Only demigods. Will not be taken seriously by those with more power. Will be resented by the others. He’s a known alcoholic. Parties and festivals are nice but there is a credibility issue here. Health, Music, Sun – He has too many responsibilities already and isn’t that double or triple-dipping? Money is nice, but why would you want someone in charge of thieves in full control of Olympus? Already killed by Zeus. He was a Titan an enemy of the Olympians. He’s handicapped. He’s ugly. He is never taken seriously. He is a follower and not a leader. She’s vengeful. She’s nasty. She is in charge of marriage and she can’t keep her own marriage together. Can beauty really be considered a leadership trait? Can someone who isn’t interested in love be a leader? Is justice always fair? Can someone who controls the land defend her kingdom from the air and sky? She did not defend herself against Hades’ advances. Is the flower more important than the stem? Can she protect Olympus when she can’t even watch over her daughter? Is the stem more important than the flower? She says she loves and protects animals but she also hunts them down. Make up your mind. The arts are nice, but come on…are they really THAT important? She was another Titan and Zeus’ mother but had little impact after his birth. She voluntarily gave up her spot on the Parthenon so that an alcoholic could rise to power. Also, If she’s not willing to fight, is she too weak to lead?
