The table shows the source publication, the location of the study, the beneficiary and benefactor species, and the type of study: A = correlative
evidence, FE = field experiment; M = evidence for mechanism; Lab = primarily laboratory evidence (after Callaway 1995). Within location,
“Artificial community” includes those studies that both construct communities or use isolated plants in pots. Within Beneficiary and Benefactor
species, “General” indicates a benefit to, or impact from, the surrounding vegetation in general. We have not included modelling studies or
