Demon in the Freezer and Cobra Event Project
Honors Biology –Spring 2012
Demon in the Freezer -100 points – due March 30, 2012
1. Describe the eradication of smallpox. Why was smallpox chosen to be eradicated, when
was it last found in nature, which agencies were involved in the eradication? Along with
the description, include an illustration to describe the ring containment method utilized.
2. Research the lytic and lysogenic cycle of a virus. Draw both cycles each on a sheet of
plain white paper (by hand). Label the cycles and explain both of the processes in detail.
3. Design a new cover for the book that illustrates what has impressed you the most.
(Drawing the same cover as on the book or simply one of the pictures included in the
novel will not earn you credit. I am looking for thought and reflection of what you have
read.)
4. Explain the purpose of storing smallpox. Where is smallpox stored and how could it be
used as a bioweapon? In your opinion, should smallpox be stored? Why? (Be specific
and explain your opinion in detail.)
5. In a chart, provide the types of smallpox that infected humans, the symptoms caused by
each type, and the likelihood of death associated with each.
6. Make a pamphlet about vaccinations and include the following: how a vaccination
works, the function of B and T cells in the immune system, the difference between active
and passive immunity, and a description of Jenner’s contributions to vaccinations.
7. Explain a cytokine storm.
8. Write and support an opinion statement on the use of animals in medical research. When
might it be necessary? Are there regulations against using animals today? Why were
monkeys used in smallpox research?
9. The novel discusses both anthrax and smallpox. Using information related to these two
infectious agents, create a Venn diagram to compare and contrast a virus and a bacterium.
10. The last statement in the Demon in the Freezer is as follows: “We could eradicate
smallpox from nature, but we could not uproot the virus from the human heart. Give
your thoughts and opinions on this statement.
The Cobra Event -100 points – due May 18, 2012
1. As you read, make a list of “SAT” terms. These should be words you do not know the
meaning of initially, but might possibly see again. Use the sentences around the terms or
a dictionary to find the meaning of these terms. You should have a minimum of 20 terms
and no proper nouns may be used.
2. Design a new cover for the book that illustrates what has impressed you the most.
(Drawing the same cover as on the book or simply one of the pictures included in the
novel will not earn you credit. I am looking for thought and reflection of what you have
read.)
3. Make a time line of all infections in the book (who had the disease 1st, 2nd, etc.),
4. Make a second time line of the disease once an individual is infected. (A time line in this
case would show a sequence or series of events, not specific dates.)
5. Using the world map provided, label the cities that the book mentions.
6. What happens to a human infected with brainpox? Describe the classic final seizure in
detail.
7. Describe what a bioreactor does and how it works.
8. The brainpox is a combination of three different viruses. Describe each and why it was
chosen by Archimedes to be used for the weapon.
9. Using analogies from the book, describe how New York is like a living organism.
10. Explain the concept of and the methods use in performing genetic engineering. Why is
this a threat with viruses like smallpox?
Comparative Essay -25 points – due May 29, 2012
Compare and contrast the two books. Discuss how the author’s approach is different and
possibly the same. Compare and contrast the viruses found in both books.
Finally, utilize information from your textbook and other sources and write a one page minimum
paper answering the following question: “Are viruses alive?” Include a discussion of the
characteristics of life and those characteristics that both living and nonliving things share.
This section should be completed in a minimum of two pages, typed, double-spaced, in 12 point
Times New Roman font, with 1 inch margins on all sides. Be detailed and do not hesitate to add
more than what is asked for.
Submission of Project


Sections of the project WILL NOT be accepted late for any reason.
The requirements for each novel should be submitted in a folder with the student’s name on
the front cover. The folder should have pockets/prongs to keep assignments from falling out.
Do not place assignments in sheet protectors for submission.
