SPARKS ON THE WORLD STAGE:
European Conflicts during the last 50 years of the 19th Century
IN AFRICA:
1. 1869-1875: Br v. Fr over Egypt and the Suez Canal.
 Br won, Egypt becomes a Br protectorate
2. 1902: Br v. Boers.
 Br won, gained control of So. Africa
IN ASIA:
3. 1856: Crimean War- Fr, Br, OE, Rus and Slavic Eastern European Sts.
 Br, AH, PR, agreed to recognize OE to keep “balance of power” and stability
in Europe. Rus influence is limited to Balkans.
4. 1876-77: Rus vs. OE over warm water ports on Med Sea.
 Rus won right to Bosphorus and Dardinelles Straits.
5. 1878: Br. vs. Rus.
 Br worried about closeness of Rus to Suez Canal. Blocked Rus from any
further Western advancement in to Mediterranean Sea at Congress of
Berlin. Rus turns toward the East….
6. 1900: Boxer Rebellion in China
 The Fists of Righteous Harmony (“Boxers”) rebel against the ruling Chinese
Dynasty and all foreign “Barbarians” corrupting influences (Br., Ger, Fr, J,
Rus)
 Rebellion unsuccessful, unrest still exists against foreigners and Qing dynasty
stays in power.
7. 1904: Rus vs. Japan over Korea and Manchuria (aka Russo-Japanese War)
 Rus loses to Japan
IN EUROPE:
8. 1870-71: Fr vs. Ger over Alsace and Lorraine’s coal fields (aka
Franco-Prussian War)
 Ger won control for a time.
9. 1878: AH given administrative control over BOSNIA by weak OE
POWDER KEG OF EUROPE
