DON’T JUST THINK ABOUT IT!
Have you ever wondered just what really goes
on behind the scenes to prepare for an event as
big as Relay For Life? Maybe you have been a
great team captain, a great team member,
responsible for fundraising or Public Relations,
either with Relay or another venue, maybe you
have never really been involved or maybe
thinking about getting more involved.
The Relay For Life of Mon. County has open
positions that may be just right for you. You get
to choose where you want to volunteer. We
have both Committee Chair positions and
committee team positions. If you are interested
– we would love to have you join us.
We anticipate the best year yet. Golf
Tournaments, Bike and 5K runs are just a few of
the ideas being shared and we need you to help
us make this year’s events successful. Bring a
friend or two, your family members and get
excited with us!
Meetings are held the 2nd Tuesday of each
month at the Mon General Conference Complex
at 6 p.m. We’d love to see you stop in and see
what we are all about.

'Be kinder than necessary because everyone you
meet is fighting some kind of battle'
Filmed in a hospital and very cool. I like the
ending. Some of the "dancers" are funny. Our
daughter-in-law, Emily (MacInnes) Somers,
created, directed and choreographed this in
Portland last week for her Medline glove division
as a fundraiser for breast cancer awareness. This
was all her idea to help promote their new pink
gloves. I don't know how she got so many
employees, doctors and patients to participate,
but it started to really catch on and they all had a
lot of fun doing it.
When the video gets 1 million hits, Medline will
be making a huge contribution to the hospital, as
well as offering free mammograms for the
community. Please check it out. It's an easy and
great way to donate to a wonderful cause, and
who hasn't been touched by breast cancer?

How Donations Make a Difference
Taken from the Relayforlife.org website
Thanks in part to the generous contributions to the American Cancer Society Relay For Life, the Society is saving
lives by helping people stay well and get well, by finding cures, and by fighting back. These are just a few examples
of how contributions make a difference in the Society’s lifesaving mission.
Helping people stay well



Our telephone counseling service, the American Cancer Society Quitline®, doubles a person’s chances of
quitting tobacco for good.
We develop guidelines for recommended cancer screenings and nutrition and physical activity, so people
know what tests they need to find cancer early and how to help prevent the disease.
We provide tips, tools, and online resources to help people set goals and stay motivated to eat healthy and
maintain an active lifestyle.
Helping people get well





Our phone lines are open every minute of every day and night to help connect people with the answers they
need. Each year, we provide information, help, and support to the nearly one million individuals who call us
at 1-800-227-2345. In addition, our Web site, cancer.org, offers access to the latest information and news
on cancer and helps people locate programs and services in their area.
We offer an online support community for cancer survivors and caregivers to share stories and find support.
We assist cancer patients in need with getting transportation to and from their treatments and offer help with
free lodging for cancer patients and their caregivers.
Through our clinical trials matching service, we connect patients with thousands of different treatment
options.
With sites at hospitals and treatment centers across the country, our American Cancer Society Patient
Navigator Program provides one-on-one guidance to people facing cancer through every step of their
journey.
Finding cures



We’ve had a hand in nearly every major cancer breakthrough of the last century, including confirming the
link between cigarette smoking and lung cancer, establishing the link between obesity and multiple cancers,
developing drugs to treat leukemia and advanced breast cancer, and showing that mammography is the
most effective way to detect breast cancer.
We’re the largest private funder of cancer research in the United States.
We fund researchers with cutting-edge ideas, often early in their careers. Of the researchers chosen for
Society funding, 42 have gone on to win the Nobel Prize, the highest honor in scientific achievement.
Fighting back



The majority of Americans are now covered by a smoke-free law, thanks in part to the efforts of the Society
and our nonpartisan advocacy affiliate, the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN).
We help mobilize communities to fight back against cancer with events such as Relay For Life and Making
Strides Against Breast Cancer®.
We have helped uninsured, underinsured, and low-income women get breast and cervical cancer screening
tests and follow-up treatment since 1991 and, along with ACS CAN, we have successfully fought for
legislation protecting this care.
By supporting Relay For Life, you help make the American Cancer Society’s mission possible, and that helps us all
move closer to our ultimate goal: a world with less cancer and more birthdays.

PLEASE - Keep your calendars open because
we are going to have to pull together to
make this a success and have an amazing
time! Not to mention we will be putting
Relay For Life of Mon County out into the
public eye. We will want publicity during all
aspects of the planning and actual event.
This could lead to an annual event for Relay
For Life of Mon County. Wouldn’t that be
exciting?
I met with Mr. Don Shillinger at
Mountaineer Golf course to set up a charity
golf tournament, which will benefit The American
Cancer Society’s " Relay for Life of Mon County"!
We have set an event date of May 22, 2010
@ 9am! Rain date is pending. I told him I
would call him around April to confirm a rain
date. I did advise him that we could do the
"rain out" tournament later in the summer, if
need be, since we should try to have all
event proceeds turned in by the end of
August for 2010 accounting records!
He advised that we have no more than 120
golfers, so that's 30 teams of 4 people! He
charges $30.00 per person so to sell the
tickets we can charge $60.00 per person and
he would get 1/2...that's the norm for most
charity golf events! We are allowed to have
the event catered by an outside vendor. We
are hoping to obtain sponsorship for the
food that would be provided. This would be
the perfect opportunity for businesses to get
involved. One strict rule is that no alcohol is
to be provided or brought in by golfers. If
golfers want to drink they must purchase the
alcohol from the golf course. Coolers are not
permitted for any reason. The only noted
Dress Code restriction was NO tank tops are
permitted.
Mr. Schillinger also shared some great ideas
about additional fund raising that we could
do during the tournament! I will bring those
ideas to the meeting table to determine what
we think we can handle! The more members
involved the day of the event – even if you
are not a golfer – the more successful we
will be. We have a great group of committee
members and we know we can pull this
event off. A grand challenge, but a great
opportunity.
We WILL need everyone’s help in getting
donations from business to use as prizes!
This would be a great time to get the whole
committee involved and have them reach out
to their available resources! If all goes well this could be an event that could bring in an
awesome amount of money for us!!!
I'm happy to say that I am ready and
pumped to take on this challenge for a great
cause!!

Team Captain NOTICE: The Relay
Department is not including registration forms
in the Team Captain packets because they want
everyone to register online. We are asking
team captains to try and enter your team
members who may not be able to do on-line
registrations. Registration forms will be
accepted in rare cases, but we are asking that
you try to make the effort to get your entire
team on-line. If you should need a
registration form and do not have any left
over from last year – please contact the ACS
office.
JAYCEE’s Choose Relay For Life
as Statewide Community Project
David,
I will be traveling that week in January to
our national Headquarters in Tulsa, but,
my hope is that our Morgantown chapter
can send a representative. This is the first
time that we have taken on a new
Community Service project for the entire
state for many, many years. Our
Statewide community project has always
been WVU Children's Hospital. Cancer
has affected so many of our members that
we wanted to add this project. This is also
our national service project. I had the
honor of participating in Moundsville's
event (Marshall County), so that I could
explain and excite our members to
participate.
I just sent an e-mail to Brandi Snyder
about our plans, etc. I would love to set an
appointment with your office in the next
few weeks.
Thank you,
Jennifer Staley, President
Brandi Snyder and I met with Jennifer at
the Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center
and are very excited to have Jaycees
involved in 2010 events. This program is
still in rollout phase and we will be
contacted by the local chapter around the
first of the year. We have invited them to
attend our committee meetings to see
where they would like to be involved. They
will be forming teams, fundraising and
promoting our events statewide. Updates
will be available at the next Committee
Meeting.

One day, One night, One community. Your
Relay For Life® is about celebration,
remembrance, and hope. By participating, you
honor cancer survivors, pay tribute to the lives
we've lost to the disease, and raise money to
help fight cancer all right here in your
community. You won't want to miss one
moment of this life and community-affirming
event!
Mylan Park Staff for the hard work and
dedication that you always put forth to
make our event a great success. We
certainly are excited about another year
at your awesome facility and hope you
will join us with your own team to walk
those laps as a part of our Relay family.
It is our community support that allows
us to continue to Remember, Celebrate
and Fight Back,
The meeting went very well –committee
members, not currently active, were asked to
step over and get involved with other
committees so that everyone is working on
something. Committees with reports were
presented, each member was provided a copy
of the agenda with space to record their
committee progress and then they turned them
into me at the end of the meeting. Kim has put
in the work order for postcards of meeting
announcements. Kim has also been working
with Centra Bank to develop an Accounting
Committee, Brandi Snyder has been working
on getting us in the Christmas Parade Dec 4th,
Gerri and I worked the Magical Night of
Giving at the Morgantown Mall and raised
$135 that night at the table – should hear about
our Relay profit soon. We get more because
we were actually working the tables and selling
tickets.
Confirmed May 22nd Golf Outing just need to
work on sponsors and catering, Gerri meets
again with Triple S in December to set up a
Relay Bike Run, Brandi presented ideas and
information regarding setting up a 5K
run/Walk which we have placed on the back
burner for now and possibly look at this event
as our Kickoff event.
Sponsorship has sent out approx 300 packets,
the committee helped prep packets during the
meeting and Kim took those to be mailed.
Discussed meetings for Team Captains, Heidi
and Holly will be assisting with these meetings
since this is there area of responsibility as a
committee. This was a very productive
meeting. Lasted about 1 ½ hours. Looking for
an Entertainment Chair!!!!
Committee Members participated in Relay
University at Fairmont State University..
We did get some great ideas from other
counties and from the individual seminars. In
addition, we made contacts with other County
Event Coordinators to build a rapport and have
agreed to support each other’s events, since it
is all for the same cause, and built camaraderie
with those from our county that attended. Kim
has pictures. Mon Co. received $100,000 Club
– we had $108,885 as our final total. We will
provide the pins and certificate at the next
meeting.
Here are some of the ideas we discussed at the
event to bring before the committee at the next
meeting: more frequent, less formal meetings
with a shorter length - possibly meeting in a
local establishment (meet twice a month for 30
– 45 mins). Adding a Memory Walk for
caregivers (have some great ideas here),
Jailhouse from Preston County will be set up at
our event-thanks to Shelly. I spoke with Jaclyn
Marsh – WVU Student Relay Event Chair and
she asked if we could meet with their group to
discuss ideas to allow us to work together in
areas such as sponsorship and to share other
ideas that may benefit both groups for our
Relays (she came looking for me!).
Our goal is to start recognizing committee
achievements, individual achievements and
team achievements during meetings and at the
event. These and other ideas will be presented
at the next meeting.
