Canada is the largest country in the western hemisphere in land area. It is
the second-largest country by land area in the entire world. The population
of Canada, about 33 million, is small compared to its land and area.
1. How does Canada’s location make it easier to trade with other countries?
2. Describe where most people live in Canada. Why?
3. List the three largest cities. What do they all have in common?
4. Why do you suppose so many Canadian cities are located near the St. Lawrence
River?
Canada’s natural resources are very important to its ability to trade with other
countries. Canada sells soil, natural gas, fish, agricultural products, and timber
to other countries. Electricity is made with hydroelectric power plants along
Canada’s rivers. Extra energy not needed by Canadians is sold to the United
States. Trade across the U.S./Canada border is relatively easy, and Canadian
businesses depend on easy trade of their goods and services to make their
businesses successful. About 80 percent of Canada’s exports come to the
United States.
Due to the cooler climate, about 5 percent of the land in Canada is arable.
The rich soil helps to produce valuable crops for consumption in Canada and
trade to other countries.
5. How does Canada’s land use compare to that of the United States? Be specific.
6. What do you think is meant by the term “arable?”
7. List the seven climate types in Canada.
8. Which climate type is the most predominant in Canada?
9. How does the humid continental climate in the southeastern portion of Canada
impact its economy? (think about how the climate affects factors of production)
10. How does Canada benefit from the St. Lawrence River?
11. Describe the location of the region most affected by acid rain in Canada.
12. Why do you think this region is the most affected? (look back to the population
and land use maps to help you)
