6. BRIEF RESUME OF THE INTENDED WORK:
6.1) NEED FOR THE STUDY:
The main aim of Ayurveda is “Swasthasya swaasthya rakshanam, Aturasya vikara prashamanam” ie to
maintain the health of a healthy person and to eradicate the disease of a diseased person.
In modern era, due to change in life style and habits , lack of physical activity with increased intake of
food specially fat increasing foods, man has become the victim of many diseases. People do not follow the
Dinacharya and Ritucharya as explained in Ayurvedic classics and hence suffers from so many disorders for
themselves. Sthoulya is one among them.
Sthoulya is such a disease which provides the platform for so many hazards like Hridroga, Madhumeha,
,Vandhyatva, Klaibya, etc as well as psychological disorders like stress, depression, anxiety etc. So to say the
mortality and morbidity are more in obese person compared to others. In many countries 50% of the adults are
overweight. Obesity has reached epidemic proportions in India in the 21st century with morbid obesity affecting
5% of the country’s population.
Sthoulya is considered as a Santarpana janya vyadhi in ayurvedic classics. The aetiological factors mainly
vitiate kapha dosha and meda dhatu and vata gets avrita by excessive meda. Thus if apatarpaka dravyas are used
alone,it increases the vitiated vata. Hence treatment should be planned considering vitiated vata, meda and
kapha. In Ayurveda ,Panchakarma includes sodhana therapies and by this it cures the disease from its root,
leaving no chance for recurrence.
In Charaka Samhita, Acharya mentioned the tikta rasatmaka dravyas which are having lekhana and
karshana karma and are suitable for the management of Sthoulya. Here lekhana basti with panchatiktaka ie
guduchi, nimba, patola , vasa ,and kantakari by virtue of its lekhana karma reduces meda and simultaneously
pacifies the vata dosha by affecting its seat pakwasaya, so here panchatikta lekhana basti is selected.
Through lekhana basti, the excessive fat deposited in the body will be reduced and thus useful for the obese
person. Hence the study entitled “Effect Of Panchatikta Lekhana Basti in the Management of Sthoulya “ is
undertaken.

medical camps those shall be conducted by Dr. B.N.M.E Trust’s Shri Mallikarjuna Swamiji Post Graduation and
Research Centre, Bijapur.
7.2) METHODS OF COLLECTION OF DATA:
Diagnosed patients of Sthoulya will be selected by random sampling with respective of their age group

will be assigned in single group.
STUDY DESIGN:
The mode of study will be a clinical study. 30patients shall be assigned into one group, excluding the dropouts. A complete clinical study will be done by treating the 30 patients with Panchatikta lekhana Basti.
The data will be collected before and after the treatment. Interventions will be compared and analyzed by
using Student’s t-test and with the consultation of a bio-statistician.

signs and symptoms according to the gradings.
4. Statistical analysis shall be done with the consultation of a bio-statistician.
