Science Year 6 Biology: Animals, including humans Explore the structure of the heart & lungs. The double circulation through the lungs & the rest of the body is explained & children learn more about blood! How does exercise affect pulse rate? Why is exercise good for us & what can harm the heart & lungs? Descriptions of Sessions Session A The heart Session B Double circulation Session C The lungs Session D Blood Session E Effect of exercise on pulse rate Session F Healthy bodies Session G Staying healthy Look at the structure of the human heart & compare to other animal hearts. Find out that it is muscle tissue that contracts & relaxes. Listen to a heart beating & discover how it pumps blood to the lungs & the rest of the body in a double circulation. Find out more about the double circulation in humans & the history of this understanding. Use a drama activity to explain the system and then research the biographies of both Galen & William Harvey. Discover some interesting details about the structure & function of the lungs. Discuss respiration (gas exchange) & the parts of the body involved with breathing in and out. Chn measure their lung capacity, do drag & drop labelling & make card lungs. Blood has many important functions: transport of oxygen, nutrients & waste materials, fights against infection & helps keep the body at the right temperature. Find out about blood groups, blood transfusion, blood pressure & blood vessels! Chn learn how to take their own pulse rate and then investigate the effect of exercise on their pulse rate & draw graphs of their findings. They will understand the importance of taking several measurements & then calculating the average (mean) result. Discover why the pulse rate increases with exercise and how exercise helps keep us & our hearts healthy. Discuss the importance of a healthy balanced diet and plenty of rest too. Chn write a leaflet to encourage others to take part in exercise. Exercise is beneficial, but what about the effects of tobacco, alcohol, caffeine, solvents & other drugs. Many of the bad effects are associated with the heart & circulatory system. Chn produce warning posters & learn some simple First Aid. © Hamilton Trust 2013 Y6 - Science Science Strands UKS2 Year 5 Living things and their habitats Biology Animals, including humans Biology Properties and changes of materials Chemistry Earth and space Physics Forces Physics © Hamilton Trust 2013 Y6 - Science Year 6 Living things and their habitats Biology Animals, including humans Biology Evolution and inheritance Biology Light Physics Electricity Physics Hamilton Trust Science Year 6 Biology Strand Animals, including humans © Hamilton Trust 2013 Y6 - Science
