X. Weeding
Weeds must be removed by hoeing or handpicking if plastic mulch is not
used. This is done at the early stage of plant growth. Be careful not to damage
the roots of standing crops. Plastic mulch can be used to minimize cost of manual
weeding and the use of herbicides. By maintaining cleanliness, quality broccoli
flowers can be achieved.
XI. Harvest
Quality broccoli heads are usually harvested when they reach full size
and are firm; never wait until the flower buds begin to open. When cutting,
include around 8-9 inches of the stem from the base of the flower head
(depending on the market requirement). It is best to harvest the heads in early
morning. Packing should be started as soon as possible after cutting.
