FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Arts/Features Editor June 23, 2011 CONTACT Merri Milwe, Artistic Director Tel.: 201-836-3499 Fax: 201-836-1734 E-mail: [email protected] ReGroup Theatre Company Brings Lost Theater Masterpiece to the Puffin Cultural Forum Teaneck, NJ, Sunday, July 17 – The Group Theatre, founded in 1931, was arguably the most important and influential theater company this country has ever known. Their vision was of a new theater that would mount original American plays to mirror the life of their troubled times. Over their 10 years of existence during the Great Depression, they presented works by Clifford Odets, Sidney Kingsley, Howard Lawson and others and also launched the careers of numerous acting teachers, directors and actors with their “method acting” approach and plays of social significance. Unfortunately, many of the plays they developed have been out of print and have gone unproduced for over 75 years. Then along came the actor Allie Mulholland, who had become disillusioned with the ever-declining state of the modern theater. After several years of research, Allie decided to spearhead an effort to resurrect and perform those powerful “lost” plays of the Group Theatre, and began to obtain reprint rights for them. His company, the ReGroup Theatre, has presented 6 of these plays to critical acclaim and collected them in their book, “The Lost Group Theatre Plays: Volume 1.” The company will treat the Puffin audience to a reading of one of these amazing plays followed by a cast reception and book signing. $5.00 suggested donation. Reservations recommended: [email protected]. Sunday, July 17, 4:00 p.m. The Puffin Cultural Forum is at 20 Puffin Way (off Teaneck Rd.) in Teaneck. Call 201-836-3499 or visit www.PuffinCulturalForum.org. ALLIE MULHOLLAND, originally from Ohio, moved to New York to attend NYU. After receiving his BFA in Acting from the Tisch School of the Arts, he appeared in several off and off-off Broadway productions, including the lead role in the 50th anniversary stage production of “Rebel Without a Cause” at Theatre Row. He has also appeared in bit parts on all four of the soap operas that once taped in New York City. REGROUP THEATRE was founded by Allie Mulholland. Believing theater should transport the audience into the world of the play, instead of bringing the play into the world of the audience, ReGroup hopes to run more like the library or symphony; that is, as a public service whose success is measured by the good it does and not by the dollars it generates. The company is composed of some of the most gifted and collaborative talent in New York, ranging in age from their early 20’s through their 60’s. Its members have been on and off Broadway, on major television series, and have trained with the best. On top of their talent, they have the collective ability to be part of a “family” of talent. Building on multiple productions with each other, they are learning a common language and growing stronger with every show. _____________________________________________________________________ The Puffin Cultural Forum is a project of the Puffin Foundation, Ltd. which, through the arts, encourages dialog about issues important to the community.
