PORTORA ROYAL SCHOOL A LEVEL MUSIC YEAR 13 INDUCTION TASK A level music will require you to work as a performer, composer and researcher of a wide range of musical styles. A level music is considerably more demanding of you as a musician than was GCSE. The following task has been designed to help you prepare for the kind of work that you will be expected to complete during the academic year. One of the musical options on the CCEA music specification is on the Broadway Musical. TASK: You will be given an excerpt taken from Musicals in Focus by Paul Terry, about the work of Andrew Lloyd Webber, a major writer of musicals for both Broadway and London’s West End. You should; 1. Read this material, highlight and make an outline of important points, such as; dates/names of shows, orchestration and musical styles popular at the time, examples of songs from each show, use of varying musical styles, technical terms for devices used and which songs these styles/devices can be found in and specific examples of these 2. You should also consult other sources for information about Lloyd Webber and his work, Such as books, films, recordings or reliable internet sources. 3. You should then compose a hand written essay which is at least four A4 pages of notebook paper in length addressing the following: “ Illustrate the contributions made by Andrew Lloyd Webber to the Broadway musical style of the 1960’s.” Your essay must feature the following; a strong opening paragraph which addresses the posed question specifically and concisely Characteristics of the era’s style Characteristics of the composer’s style Discussion of at least two musicals, two songs from each, which feature specific musical styles or devices used2 Styles and devices should also be discussed in detail A concluding paragraph that summarizes the points you have made 4. Submit a list of all other resources you have consulted in your study, such as books, recordings, live performances attended Get involved! Go to see a live musical.
