World History 2005-06 Mr. Brian McClure Email: [email protected] Course Overview: World History Content and Objectives: This course is a year-long comprehensive survey of World History from the age of exploration in the 1500’s to the 20th century. It will provide students with the necessary background for understanding the current political, economic, and cultural structure of modern states. We will focus on the historical development of European, Asian, American and African states, noting the impact of and upon surrounding continents. The objectives of this course are to explore the issues of Modern World History and try to make sense of them--to have an understanding of recent history and how it affects our lives, relations, and world affairs. The course also holds the objective of attempting to prepare you for college. This translates into such things as being able to think independently, read with a critical eye, and write at a level in which you can communicate effectively and powerfully. Over the course of the year you will learn the tools and skills necessary to do this and you will be expected to take increasing responsibility for your own learning and ability to work independently. Text: The Global Past: 1500 to the Present Volume 2 (Bedford Books, 1998) Organization: Staying organized is half the battle for success in school! You will be required to have a binder, for history only, with at least four sections: 1) Class notes; 2) Homework notes; 3) Handouts; 4) Returned Tests and Papers. You can have more sections if you wish. Your binder will be subject to spot inspection, and you are expected to have everything in its proper place. Homework/Reading Assignments: You will receive an assignment sheet every week or so, usually to correspond with each new chapter. Expect reading (6-12 pages) and writing almost every night. The purpose of the nightly reading is to prepare you for the next day’s discussion. The purpose of the assignments is to help you extract important information from the reading and practice your thinking skills. Expectations: Be Responsible: Be at your desk in the classroom, in dress code, five minutes after the preceding bell. Have your notebook/binder open and ready to takes notes. Bring your own pen or pencil to class. Always bring your text and other assigned material to class as well Take responsibility for your own learning. Do your own work. Do your reading and your homework questions on time. Make up your work when you are absent and seek help when you need it. Be Respectful: DO NOT talk while someone else—a peer or your teacher—is talking Pay attention in class, and listen to announcements Appreciate the contributions of your classmates, and do not make belittling, insulting, or derogatory comments to any one or about anyone Do NOT take property that does not belong to you. Do NOT damage or deface property that does not belong to you. DO NOT whine—about the workload, your grade, the heat, etc. Be Honest: Do your OWN work (see below) Do not pretend to be sick on test days Be truthful in everything you say Assessments: There will be a variety of assessments in this course: 1. Tests—You will have one test per quarter. (25% of grade) 2. Quizzes—You will have at least one quiz per chapter. However, this category will also include pop quizzes on the homework. (30% of Grade) 3. Writing and Projects—Written assignments will include major research papers and minor homework essays. You will have one major essay for each semester and at least two other smaller writing assignments per semester. Also, other projects, such as debates, will be included in this category. (30% of Grade) 4. Homework and Daily Preparation: All of your homework assignments will be checked and you will have at least 5 of these assignments collected and graded per quarter. Also, your general preparedness for class, including your binder organization and willingness and ability to join in class discussions will factor into this part of your grade. (15% of Grade) If this grade breakdown changes over the course of the year (because of additional projects, for instance) you will be notified by your teacher. General Scope & Sequence of Course: First Semester Issue of Modernity World Exploration Colonialism The American Exchange The African Slave Trade Empire in Asia and Africa The Renaissance and Protestant Reformation European Absolutism Revolutions of America, Europe, and Asia The Industrial Revolution Rise of Nationalism Important Policies: Second Semester Global Imperialism Influence of Darwin and Marx World War I Transformation in Russia and China The Great Depression The Rise of Dictatorships World War II The Cold War Changes since 1945 Influence of Art Rise of Globalism Late Work—Assignments are due at the beginning of cIass. Period! Assignments turned in after the date and time due will be penalized 1/3 of a letter grade (3 points) each day late (drop day included.) Computer and printer problems are not an acceptable excuse: Remember: you can always email your work to me at [email protected]. Whether your work is collected or not, if your assignment is missing, this infraction will be recorded. Remember: “Mostly Done” does not equal Done! After your third infraction, each subsequent infraction will result in a one point deduction from your final quarter grade. No exceptions! The system resets at the beginning of the next quarter. Note: This includes both IMCOMPLETE and MISSING assignments. (i.e., “I did it, but I left it at home!) It is your responsibility to know how many infractions you have. Tardiness—You are expected to be to class on time. Remember there is only a bell to end class. You have five minutes to get to your next class. This is plenty of time. There are no excuses. Make sure your watch is in time with the clock in the room. Infractions for tardiness will be dealt with the same way as infractions for missing work (see above.) That is, after the third infraction, there will be a point deduction. Absences—It is your responsibility to get any handouts you missed (from me) and class notes (from a classmate). It is also your responsibility to turn in any work that was due upon your return to school. If your history paper was due first period and you slept in but arrived at school later that day, you must bring me your paper that day or it will be counted late. Absence for Tests—If you are absent on the day of a scheduled test, you will take the test on the day you return to school, even if it is your drop day for this class. Exceptions to this policy (for an extended absence, for example) will be made at the teacher's discretion. If you are absent the day before a scheduled test but return to school on the day of the test, you will take the test as scheduled (unless there are mitigating circumstances). It is your responsibility to call a classmate the night before to find out what was covered in class that day. Academic Honesty is expected at all times. All work you turn in is to be wholly and completely your own. There is no collaboration on assignments unless specifically authorized by the teacher. Plagiarism and/or cheating will be dealt with seriously. At the minimum, you wiII receive a zero for that assignment, and the issue may be turned over to the Discipline/Honor Committee. See the St. Luke's Handbook for more information. Some definitions: Plagiarism - Unacknowledged use of someone else's words, ideas, or opinions. For example, copying, paraphrasing, or using any material from books, the Internet, or any other source without giving proper credit in a citation and/or bibliography. Cheating - Using or copying work that is not your own OR allowing your work to be used or copied. This prohibits using work from students in your class, from students in other sections, or from tests or papers from previous years of the course. It also prohibits discussing assignments with classmates before or during work on them. Additionally, you should not enlist the aid of your parents while writing papers or essays. In general, all work you turn in must be wholly your own unless your teacher has specifically authorized collaborative work in the process of doing an assignment or in the presentation of the final piece of work. If you are unsure if what you are about to do constitutes plagiarism or cheating, it is your responsibility to check with your teacher.
