Rationale: Why should my students learn this?
These skills are important to become a CNA. Their reading skill level must be high enough to pass
the state competency exam. Next, they must be able to key in patient reports into the agencies
computer system. Finally, they must be able to communicate with patients in a friendly way. The
industry wants their hires to be “people persons”

Procedure/Instructional Outline:
A student who enters the CNA program at the community college must know how to use a computer.
TSLW has computer classes to help students to learn the computer. The student will need to practice
what they have learned. They can come to our office and practice their skills.
Communication skills are very important when a person gets a CNA job. Six communication skills are:
1. Assertiveness - A core communication skill. Being assertive means that you express yourself
effectively and stand up for your point of view while also respecting the rights and beliefs of
others.
2. Authenticity - The quality of being authentic and genuine.
3. Open-mindedness - Is receptiveness to new ideas. Open-mindedness relates to the way in
which people approach the views and knowledge of others, and "incorporate the beliefs that
others should be free to express their views and that the value of others' knowledge should be
recognized."
4. Empathy - The feeling that you understand and share another person's experiences and
emotions: the ability to share someone else's feelings.
5. Clarity - Clearness or lucidity as to perception or understanding; freedom from indistinctness
or ambiguity
6. Listening - The ability to accurately receive and interpret messages in the communication
process.
Why is Communication Important?
Excellent communication is based on mutual respect. An effective and diplomatic communication
style is important when working with patients. It shows that you respect yourself because you are
willing to stand up for your interests and express your thoughts and feelings. It also demonstrates that
you are aware of the rights of others and are willing to work on resolving conflicts.
Of course, it is not just what you say, but it is also how you say it that's important. Communication is
direct and respectful. Being assertive gives you the best chance of successfully delivering your
message.
Homework Assignment: Talk to the HR person in so nursing and rehibiltation facilities.
In North Carolina, you must submit to drug testing and a FBI criminal background check. A negative
TB test is another prerequisite to meet before you are able to start training as a nurse aide. Having upto-date immunizations are also a must, including varicella, Hepatitis B, and TDaP. Additionally, a
doctor must deem you physically fit for the position and free of any communicable diseases that could
threaten the health of patients and residents.
