Communication skills are very important when a person gets a CNA job. Six communication skills are: 1. Assertiveness - A core communication skill. Being assertive means that you express yourself effectively and stand up for your point of view while also respecting the rights and beliefs of others. 2. Authenticity - The quality of being authentic and genuine. 3. Open-mindedness - Is receptiveness to new ideas. Open-mindedness relates to the way in which people approach the views and knowledge of others, and "incorporate the beliefs that others should be free to express their views and that the value of others' knowledge should be recognized." 4. Empathy - The feeling that you understand and share another person's experiences and emotions: the ability to share someone else's feelings. 5. Clarity - Clearness or lucidity as to perception or understanding; freedom from indistinctness or ambiguity 6. Listening - The ability to accurately receive and interpret messages in the communication process. Why is Communication Important? Excellent communication is based on mutual respect. An effective and diplomatic communication style is important when working with patients. It shows that you respect yourself because you are willing to stand up for your interests and express your thoughts and feelings. It also demonstrates that you are aware of the rights of others and are willing to work on resolving conflicts. Of course, it is not just what you say, but it is also how you say it that's important. Communication is direct and respectful. Being assertive gives you the best chance of successfully delivering your message.
