CW—“resists water pressure”
HOW: it prevents the cell from exploding
because it contains too much water (osmotic
pressure)
Lyso—“suicide bags”
Eliminates organelles that no longer
function well AND it can eliminate its whole
cell if not functioning well
HOW: it either “consumes” organelles OR it
releases its digestive enzymes into the cell
Nucleus—“like the main office in a factory”
chromosomes (genetic library)
Nucleolus (produces ribosomes)
HOW: sends detailed instructions (RNA) to
the factory (ribosomes) WHEN NEEDED
Proteoplastids—“stores proteins”
NOT a result of sunlight, even though they
are found in plant cells
HOW: proteins are assembled by the
ribosomes and given a membrane by the RER
(packaged)
RER—“transport network”
HOW: it is a tube-like membrane
Also functions in detoxification
Golgi—“modify/sort/package”, also prepare
these materials for export from the cell
Vacuole—“storage units”
Central—all eukaryotes (plant-1 large,
animal-many small), largest structure in the
plant cell, main job is to provide internal
support; in animal cells, small like a
mitochondria, main job is to store nutrients
Contractile—found in protists, requires E to
function properly
Microtubules—“skeletal”
Forms a spindle—functions in the process of
mitosis
SER—“tubular”
The whole structure is membrane bound—
its like a flattened straw that’s bent and reshaped
so that materials can be transported around the
cell
Ribos—
Chloroplast—“photosynthetic plastid”
HOW: converts solar E to chemical E
Esolar + 6CO2 + 6 H2O  C6H12O6 + 6O2
Mitochondria—“produces E for the cell (ATP)
HOW: converts chemical E to usable (ATP) E
C6H12O6 + 6O2  6CO2 + 6 H2O + EATP
