Respiratory System
Topical Understanding
In the body, respiration occurs at two levels. Cellular respiration, which takes place in the
mitochondria, is the release if energy from the breakdown of food molecules in the presence of
oxygen. Organismal respiration is the process of gas exchange. The basic function performed by
the respiratory system is remarkably simple – to bring about the exchange of oxygen and carbon
dioxide between the blood, air, and tissues. The process of respiration includes breathing,
transport of gases by the circulatory system, and exchange of gases with body cells. The rate of
respiration is controlled by the autonomic nervous system in response to the pH of the blood.
Smoking can cause many respiratory diseases such as chronic bronchitis, emphysema,
and lung cancer.
Essential Questions
 How does the respiratory system depend upon all other body systems? How do other body
systems depend upon the respiratory system?
 How are cellular and Organismal respiration related?
 How does gas exchange occur in the lungs?
 How is breathing controlled? What is the role of the muscular and nervous system in
controlling the rate of breathing?
 How does smoking affect the respiratory system? What diseases does smoking contribute to?
Areas of Focus
= Respiratory system anatomy
= Gas exchange and control of breathing
= Smoking and respiratory system diseases
