BINGO Review Questions
SECTION 2-1
Water covers this percentage of the Earth’s surface.
 75%
About this percentage of the Earth’s water is found in its oceans.
 97%
Most of Earth’s fresh water is found here.
 North and South Poles
Known as the supercontinent, scientists theorize that this single landmass existed millions of years ago
 Pangea
An area of the Earth’s surface with a definite shape
 Landform
A landform with steep sides that rises more than 2,000 feet above sea level
 Mountain
A landform that rises above the surrounding land and has a rounded top
 Hill
A large, mostly flat area that rises above the surrounding land
 Plateau
A large area of flat or gently rolling land
 Plain
Theory that the Earth’s crust is made up of huge, slowly moving plates
 Plate tectonics
A huge section of the Earth’s crust
 Plate
The breaking down of rocks by wind, rain, or ice
 Weathering
Process by which water, wind, or ice wears away landforms and carries the material to another place
 Erosion
Air; a thick blanket of gases that surrounds the Earth
 Atmosphere
SECTION 2-2
- Any useful material found on the Earth
- Anything from the Earth that people use in meeting their needs for food, clothing, and shelter
 Natural Resource
A material in its natural state, before being processed into a useful product
 Raw Material
A material that cycles through natural processes in the environment
 Recyclable Resource
A material that the environment continues to supply or replace as it is used
 Renewable Resource
A material that cannot be replaced once it is used up
 Nonrenewable Resource
Any of several nonrenewable resources, such as coal, oil, or natural gas, that were created long ago from the
remains of plants and animals
 Fossil Fuel
Fossil fuels include coal, natural gas, and this.
 Petroleum
Trees are raw materials, because they must be processed to become useful materials such as paper and lumber.
 True
Water is a recyclable resource.
 True
The United States consumes/uses more petroleum than it produces.
 True
When there is a shortage of something, it becomes cheaper.
 False
SECTION 2-3
Condition of the air over a short period of time
 Weather
Degree of hotness or coldness
 Temperature
All forms of water, including rain, sleet, hail, and snow, that fall to the ground from the air
 Precipitation
Weather patters of an area typical over a long period of time
 Climate
Plants
 Vegetation
Locations in western Europe are typically colder than locations at the same latitude in North America due to the
effects of ocean currents.
 False
Cold air rises, and hot air falls.
 False
Water takes longer to heat and cool than land.
 True
Hurricanes are storms that form over the ocean in the tropics.
 True
Without wind and water, the Earth would overheat.
 True
Found in the low latitudes, this climate is hot, wet, and sunny. The vegetation is tropical rain forest with thousands
of kinds of plants. Trees grow to 130 feet (40 meters). Other trees, vines, and ferns grow in their shade.
 Tropical Climate
A dry, hot climate with little rain and sandy, gravelly soil. Vegetation is sparse and plant roots are shallow to
absorb water before it evaporates. Some plants have small leaves, which lose little moisture.
 Dry Climate
This climate is found in the high latitudes and is cold all year. Vegetation includes low shrubs, mosses, and lichens
(plants that grow on rocks). There are no trees and few flowering plants.
 Polar Climate
Found in the middle latitudes, this climate has moderate rainfall, temperatures that rarely fall below freezing, and
varied vegetation. Forests include deciduous trees (trees that lose their leaves in fall), shrubs, low bushes,
wildflowers, and a variety of grasses.
 Moderate Climate
Summer temperatures are moderate to hot; winters are cold. Vegetation includes grasslands and forests. Large
deciduous forests occur where temperatures are moderate, while colder regions have coniferous trees (trees with
needles and cones).
 Continental Climate
