Volume of freight transport relative to GDP This indicator is defined as the ratio between tonne-kilometers - volume of inland freight transport by road, rail and inland waterways, respectively, and Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Definition The transport of goods by road includes the transport by motor vehicles registered in the reporting country, while the transport by rail and inland waterways includes the transport on the national territory regardless the nationality of the vehicle. The variable is calculated from the tonne-km (tkm) indicator, defined as the transport of one tonne of freight over a distance of one km. Unit of measure Index on year 2000 of the current year value for tonne-kilometers related to GDP in chain-linked volumes, expressed in Euro at 2000 exchange rate. Purpose Highlighting the trend of freight transport, as against the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) development. Symbol RS/GDP (Index 2000=100) Computation method Ratio of inland freight transport value for the transport modes considered and the GDP value (euro, at 2000 exchange rate), indexed to the reference year 2000. ∑ [(tonne-km) road, (tonne-km) rail, (tonne-km) inland waterway transport] Computation formula Igoods (current year) = ------------------------------------------------------------, GDP (Euro at the 2000 exchange rate) * Igoods (year 2000) Necessary data The value of tonne-km indicator for the transport of goods by road, rail and inland waterways and GDP value in euro, at the 2000 exchange rate.
