Snapshot: List at least ten terms that relate to World War II. These can be leaders, battles and

I. Overview: Unlike WWI which the United States fought in to make the “world safe for
__________________,” WWII was more about stopping ____________ run amuck.
It was about stopping really bad leaders from doing what they were trying to do.
II. Causes of WWII
A. One of the major causes was the Treaty of ________________. What did the
Treaty of Versailles do? It ended ________, but how is it a cause of WWII?
Remember this is the treaty which created The League ______________ whose
sole purpose was to keep world _________ from ever occurring again? It is also
the same treaty which made Germany pay 33 billion dollars in _____________ and

But Germany suffered greatly during the 1920s & 30s. Thanks to the

C. Later that same month: French and British leaders met with Hitler. They don’t

The League of Nations and the USA:
A. Well, without the United States, the League of Nation was not very ___________.
Also, _______________ withdrew from the League in 1933. Many countries in
the League didn’t want to go to ______ to stop these leaders because, remember,

League pretty much did nothing. When war started, the League of Nations

European Theater Battles
A. June 1941- Jan. 1943: The Siege of _______________: The USSR was now part of

but Germany surrendered in the end. This battle kept Germans from having access
to Russia’s ______ fields.
B. El Alamein: Stalin begged FDR & Churchill to invade Europe so the Germans
would have to fight on two fronts. Both said, “____, but we will invade from the
________.” The allies invaded North ___________ in November 1942 and by
May 1943, the Germans were _____ of North Africa. The Allies then entered
Europe from Italy. This battle also kept Germany from getting control of MidEast _____.

operation in modern warfare history.
D. There was a very impressive German counter attack, the Battle of the ________!

VII. Pacific Theater Battles\
a. Battle of the ___________ Sea, May 1942: a five day air battle which kept the

b. _____________ Death March. The Philippines Feb. 1942. Out of supplies
American & Philippino troops _____________ to the Japanese. Near starvation
they are forced to march 70 miles (6 days) with no food or water in tropical heat.
