Global Winds: Produced by the movement of air between the equator and poles.
Convection Cells: The recycling of cold, high density and hi-pressure air with denser, warm, low-pressure
air.
Doldrums: Little or no wind area near equator where warm air rises.
Horse Latitudes: Little or low wind area where air is falling.
Westerlies: Winds that blow from the west to the east.
Polar Easterlies: Winds that blow away from the poles.
Trade Winds: Winds that blow from the horse latitudes toward the equator.
Coriolis Effect: Objects in the Northern Hemisphere are deflected to the right, while objects in the
Southern Hemisphere are deflected to the left due to the rotation of the earth.
Local Winds: Winds that are influenced by the topographic features of a relatively small region.
Jet Stream: Strong, generally westerly winds concentrated in a narrow and shallow stream in the upper
troposphere of the earth.
