Triola Addison-Wesley Publishing Company Reading, Massachusetts – Copyright 2010 Course Description: An introduction to basic statistical terminology, organization of data, measures of central tendency and dispersion, review of combinations, permutations, and probability, binomial and normal distributions, hypothesis testing and a variety of other statistical techniques. The student will be using the most current computer software available as a basis for these analyses. Prerequisites: Math 1513 - College Algebra or Instructor Permission Next Course in Sequence: Math 2593 - Applied Statistics Course Objectives: Students will gain an understanding of the measures central tendency, probability, sampling, distribution, descriptive statistics, statistical inference, hypothesis testing, correlation, linear regression, analysis of variance and process control. Grading: You are encouraged to read the explanations in your text before the material is discussed in class. Specific problems will be assigned, collected and graded. Class attendance is an important consideration in determining your final grade. More than two absences will result in lowering your final grade. Your final grade will be based on the following: 1) 2) 3) 4) 3) Home Work Assignments ------------Special Test One -----------------Midterm Examination --------------Special Test Two -----------------Comprehensive Final Examination --- 1 worth 100 points worth 50 points worth 150 points worth 50 points worth 150 points The following schedule will be used to compute your final grade based on the total number of possible points: Points Grade 450 - 500 A 400 - 449 B 350 - 399 C 300 - 349 D Below 300 F Homework Assignments: Homework Assignments will consist of problems and in class handouts. These assignments must be turned in on or before the due date. No credit will be given for work turned in after the due date. Class attendance is expected: Attendance is especially important in statistics. More than two absences could result in lowering your final grade. If you cannot attend a scheduled examination, you are expected to advise me prior to your absence. Any make-up exam will be administered at your instructor's discretion. Class Schedule: A schedule of assigned homework is attached. These will be collected, graded and returned. -----------------------------------------------------------ELEMENTARY STATISTICS – SUMMER 2009 TENTATIVE CLASS PRESENTATION SCHEDULE June 1 Introduction to Statistics Chapter 1 Sections 1-1 through 1-5 June 3 Summarizing and Graphing Data Chapter 2 Sections 2-1 through 2-5 June 8 Statistics Describe, Explore & Compare Data Chapter 3 Sections 3-1 through 3-4 June 10 Probability Chapter 4 Sections 4-1 through 4-8 June 15 Probability Distributions Chapter 5 Sections 5-1 through 5-5 June 17 Normal Probability Distribution Chapter 6 Sections 6-1 through 6-7 SPECIAL TEST NUMBER ONE June 22 Estimates and Sample Sizes Chapter 7 Sections 7-1 through 7-3 June 24 Hypothesis Testing Chapter 8 Sections 8-1 through 8-4 2 June 29 MIDTERM EXAMINATION Chapter 1 through Chapter 7 July 1 Chapter 8 July 6 Inferences from Two Samples Chapter 9 Sections 9-1 through 9-5 July 8 Correlation and Regression Chapter 10 Sections 10-1 through 10-6 SPECIAL TEST NUMBER TWO July 13 Goodness-0f-Fit and Contingency Tables Chapter 11 Sections 11-1 through 11-4 July 15 Analysis of Variance - ANOVA Chapter 12 Sections 12-1 through 12-3 July 20 Nonparametric Statistics Chapter 13 Sections 13-1 through 13-7 Statistical Process Control Chapter 14 Sections 14-1 through 14-3 JULY 22 FINAL EXAMINATION - COMPREHENSIVE Chapters 1 through 14 Sections 8-5 through 8-6 TENTATIVE SCHEDULE OF ASSIGNMENTS Assignment # 1 Due June 3, 2009 Chapter 1 Page 38 Quick Quiz Prob. 1 thru 10 Page 38 - 39 Prob. 1, 3, 5, 7 & 9 Assignment # 2 Due June 8, 2009 Pages 53 - 54 Page 58 Pages 68 - 69 Page 76 Assignment # 3 Due June 15, 2009 Chapters 3 and 4 Pages 94 - 96 Prob. 7, 17, 19 & 23 Pages 110 - 111 Prob. 7, 17 & 19 Page 127 - 128 Prob. 5,7,9,11,13,15,17,27 Page 130 Quick Quiz Prob. 1 thru 10 Page 148 Prob. 3, 14 & 15 Page 157 - 158 Prob. 9, 15, 21 & 29 Page 189 - 190 Prob. 7,8,9,11, 13 & 15 Page 195 Quick Quiz Prob. 1 thru 10 3 Chapter 2 Prob. 5,7,13,17,19 & 23 Prob. 9 and 15 Prob. 7, 9, 11, 15 and 25 Quick Quiz Prob. 1 thru 10 Assignment # 4 Due June 22, 2009 Chapters 5 and 6 Pages 215 - 217 Prob. 11,15, 21, 25 & 29 Pages 226 Prob. 13,15,17,19 &25 Pages 232 – 233 Prob. 11 & 15 Page 241 Quick Quiz Prob. 1 thru 10 Pages 261 – 262 Prob. 5,7,9,15,19 & 33 Pages 272 - 274 Prob. 3,7,11,15,17,25,29&31 Pages 285 – 286 Prob. 5 & 13 Pages 296 – 298 Prob. 5, 9, 13 & 19 Pages 306 - 307 Prob. 5,7,9,11,13,15,23&27 Page 319 Quick Quiz Prob. 1 thru 10 Assignment # 5 Due June 29, 2009 Chapter 7 Pages 340 - 343 Prob. 5,9,13,17,21,27&31 Pages 352 – 354 Prob. 5,7,9,13,21 & 25 Pages 365 – 368 Prob. 5,7,9,13,19 & 27 Pages 378 – 379 Prob. 13, 15, 19 & 21 Page 382 Quick Quiz Prob. 1 thru 10 Assignment # 6 Due July 6, Pages 409 Pages 420 Pages 430 Pages 440 Pages 448 Pages 453 – Assignment # 7 Due July 13, 2009 Chapter 9 Pages 469 - 471 Prob. 5, 13, 15, 17 & 29 Pages 482 – 484 Prob. 5,7,13,19, 23 & 25 Pages 494 - 495 Prob. 9, 13 & 15 Pages 504 – 505 Prob. 13 & 17 Page 507 Quick Quiz Prob. 1 thru 10 Assignment # 8 Due July 15, 2009 Chapter 10 Pages 531 - 535 Prob. 9,15,21,27,33 & 34 Pages 548 – 550 Prob. 9, 13, 21 & 27 Pages 558 – 559 Prob. 13 & 17 Page 573 - 574 Prob. 5, 7 & 15 Page 576 Quick Quiz Prob. 1 thru 10 Assignment # 9 Due July 22, 2009 Chapter 11 Pages 595 – 597 Prob. 11 & 21 Pages 607 - 609 Prob. 7, 9, 13 & 17 Pages 619 Quick Quiz Prob. 1 thru 10 Assignment #10 Due July 22, 2009 Chapter 12 Page 641 Prob. 11 & 13 2009 Chapter 8 410 Prob. 5,7,9,11,13,15,17&19 421 Prob. 5, 9, 17 & 21 431 Prob. 8, 13 & 19 442 Prob. 15,17,25 & 31 449 Prob. 11, 15 & 17 452 Quick Quiz Prob. 1 thru 10 4
