JOB DESCRIPTION: PRESIDENT
Position: President
Reports to: Greater Mystic Chamber of Commerce Board
Location: Mystic, CT
Mission Statement:
The mission of the Greater Mystic Chamber of Commerce is to be an advocate
for business and tourism; to promote business alliances; to provide valuable
benefits and services to our members; and to serve as a strong community
partner in the economic development efforts in the Greater Mystic area.
Position Overview:
The President is responsible to Board of Directors for a full range of activities,
including but not limited to planning, organizing, directing and controlling the
Chamber’s services, products, economic development and public policy
activities for association’s members and responds to the needs of its members
within available and agreed upon financial resources. Oversees the affiliate
organizations of the GMCC including the Groton Business Association and
Greater Mystic Chamber Foundation.
Develops and maintains a collaborative working relationship between the key
business & public policy organizations, other regional chambers and regional
organizations to foster a nurturing business environment for members.
Oversees staff and volunteers to manage all day-to-day operations of the
chamber of commerce. Delegates some responsibilities while providing
oversight for member services, events, marketing, business services, public
policy, financial, human resource, and other related functions.
Responsibilities:
1. Program of Work: The President is responsible for identification of Chamber
and Community needs and for the preparation of a program of work
designed to meet these needs. This involves a constant evaluation of the
program, with recommendations for change as needed, and a system of
measuring progress toward attainment of program and community goals.
2. Organizational Structure & Procedures: President must pay attention to
the internal structure of the Chamber to ensure that the organization is
effectively geared to function with efficiency in the anticipation,
identification, and solution of Chamber/Community problems.
3. Income and Expenses - The President is responsible for developing the
Chamber budget and relating budget to program goals. As approved by
the Board, the President is responsible for all expenditures within the

framework of the budget. He/she will have bookkeeper prepare monthly
financial statements of income and expenses. He/she will ensure that
financial records of the Chamber are audited annually.
Membership & Events – The President will oversee the Membership staff to
ensure that membership is maintained and grown to ensure necessary
income for the operation of the program. The President will approve and
oversee the Chamber of Events to ensure that they align with the
strategic direction of the organization.
Staff - The President is responsible for the employment of all staff
personnel, the assignment of their duties, the supervision of their work,
and the establishment of the terms of their employment.
Interpretation of Policy: President will prepare statements of Chamber
positions on public issues to be reviewed by Executive Committee.
Long-Range Planning - Under direction of a constantly evolving Board of
Directors, the President is responsible for maintaining continuity and
consistency in programming. Based on proper research of community
needs, the President must anticipate emerging and long-range problems
and recommend Chamber and Community programs to meet such
needs.
. Liaison a. With the Board of Directors - The President must earn and maintain
the respect and confidence of the Board, individually and
collectively. The President is responsible for preparing an agenda,
maintaining Board minutes and records, carrying out plans and
programs of the Board in accordance with established policies,
initiating programs for consideration by the Board, and advising the
Board on all matters under consideration.
b. With Chamber Members - The President must motivate members to
support, personally and financially, an aggressive Chamber
program. The President must analyze and interpret the needs of
members and recommend revisions in the program of work to
improve service and assistance to make membership more
valuable. The President will entertain suggestions, proposals, and
requests from the members and translate them into action
consistent with the fundamental objectives and policies of the
Chamber.
c. With Staff: President must lead the professional staff. He/she is
responsible for employment and training of all staff members and is
responsible for their efficient performance of duty. President must
create working conditions that are conducive to performance and
employee morale.
d. With the Community: The President helps shape the community.
He/she is frequently called upon to relate Chamber activities to the
activities of groups in improvement of commercial, industrial, and
civic life of the community. The President represents the Chamber in
meetings of local, state, and national organizations. He/she must
constantly strive to develop a better public understanding of the
purpose and functions of the organization.
Qualifications:
 Bachelor’s degree required
 Five years in a responsible position at a chamber of commerce or other
similar civic, community or non-profit organization
 Proficient knowledge of computer systems, specifically MS Office
products, and Social Media.
 Display leadership characteristics (Organization, Planning, Negotiation,
and Diplomacy).
 Outstanding public speaking and presentation skills.
 Outstanding time management skills
 Ability to communicate – verbal, non-verbal and listening skills with
volunteers, members, peers, and co-workers.
