Lesson Plans
Chapter 5 — The Integumentary System
[Chapter 5 is addressed on pp. 35-40 of the IM]
Goals of the Lesson:
Cognitive: The student will gain an understanding of the critical function of the skin, including its structure (inner and
outer layers) and accessory structures (hair and nails). The student will also gain an appreciation for the skin’s role in
thermoregulation, protection against dehydration, and sensation.
Motor: Ability to use a microscope
Learning Outcomes:
The lesson plan for each Learning Outcome starts on the page shown below.
Learning Outcome 5-1: Name and describe the layers of the skin........................................................................................... 5-2
Learning Outcome 5-2: Describe the subcutaneous tissue. ...................................................................................................... 5-3
Learning Outcome 5-3: Give the location and function of the accessory structures of the integumentary system. ................. 5-4
Learning Outcome 5-4: List the main functions of the integumentary system. ....................................................................... 5-6
Learning Outcome 5-5: Discuss the factors that contribute to skin color. ............................................................................... 5-7
Learning Outcome 5-6: Using information in the case study and the text, describe the specific layer of the integumentary
system that was sun-damaged ...................................................................................................................................................5-8
Learning Outcome 5-7: Show how word parts are used to build words related to the integumentary system. ........................ 5-9
