The Marine Science Song written and performed by Jeff Puleo, December 2012
Intro:
Kingdom, phylum, class, order, family
You got your genus, species baby, that’s taxonomy
Marine biology; it means so much to me
I’m gonna break it down, so listen closely
Verse 1:
Mollusca, Gastropoda, baby call it what you wanna
Cephalopoda, cuttlefish, I can’t believe I’m doing this
Chordata, subphylum Vertebrata
Gotta have the characteristics, post anal tail, pharyngeal slits
Arthropoda, break it down Chelicerata
Horseshoe crab in the sand, blue blood, hemocyanin
Eukarya, silica, I’m kinda gettin’ sick of ya
Dinoflagellates, coccolithophorids, holy sh**
Anaerobic, better know it, spittin’ lines like a poet
Always knowin’, when I’m flowin’, talkin’ ‘bout the ocean
Chorus:
I can’t believe I wrote a song talking about fish and how they act
I can’t believe I wrote it down; I was drunk for half of this I’ll add
I hope that I get, baby that extra credit, when I say…Derek Jeter
Verse 2:
Respiration, homeostasis, gotta know the simple basics
Marine life, it’s so nice when we try
Osmosis, the mostest, it’s always got me goin’
I’m rollin’ these moments, you know I’m bestowin’
The facts on the sick track, I kick back, I relax
Don’t nick-knack the patty-whack; just give a fish a hook
Scientific name, yeah it drives you insane
Can’t pronounce a single word; it’s the craziest thing you’ve heard
Salinity, anemone, please don’t get ahead of me
The deep sea is beneath my feet on this concrete
Autotroph, I’ve had enough, you can’t call off my bluff
‘Cause my stuff is better than an organic compound
Chorus: REPEAT
Break down:
Cartilaginous fish that you never wanna miss
With their counter-shading parts, sharks bigger than a go-cart
Hermaphroditism, yeah they’re never gonna listen
When you gotta pick your sex, it’s too complex for this context
Air bladder, watch it splatter, when you put it on a platter
When it’s flatter does it really even matter?
Camouflage when it’s hard, always knowin’ where you are
From the start, pick apart from all the stars
Yeah this notion from the ocean, got my mind and devotion
Never goin’ with erosion, cause I’m lovin’ every moment
Last line spitten rhymes to the tides, every time we live and die
We talk about marine life
End Chorus:
I can’t believe I wrote a song talking about fish and how they act
I can’t believe I wrote it down and sung it to the whole freakin’ class
I hope that I get, baby that extra credit, when I say…Derek Jeter
Ending:
Oh my freakin’ God, Derek Jeter, oh-oh
We’re talkin’ ‘bout marine life, livin’ on the high life
Deep sea critta’s, bioluminescent killa’s
I’m gonna sing it right now, fish up in my town
Didn’t think I’d be this good, but baby you should know how
That when I stick out my hand I got that Long Island sand
Maybe then you should step back and comprehend
That fish are cool!!!
