Conservative Sharp Wound Debridement (CSWD) is an advanced clinical skill for health
practitioners involved in wound management. This workshop will provide health
practitioners with the necessary grounding in the procedure and techniques of
Conservative Sharp Wound Debridement.
The session will cover:
Indications for CSWD; Benefits and risks; Precautions and contra-indications; Equipment
required; Techniques for performing the procedure; Hands-on workshop undertaking basic
CSWD techniques
This session will not confirm clinical competency in CSWD but will provide a sound
understanding of the procedure to safely pursue development and attainment of skills and
competence in practice. Participants must have a sound understanding of basic wound
healing and wound management principles and work in clinical settings where CSWD
would enhance their practice.
Lower limb assessment is the basis for developing a best practice management
plan for people with lower limb wounds. Differentiating between arterial,
venous and neuropathic ulcers is vital to the treatment plan to ensure good
outcomes.
This session will cover:

Lower limb assessment techniques

The importance of taking a history

Examining the patient, including peripheral pulses

Investigations including ABPI & Toe Pressures

Monofilament testing

The actual diagnosis. What does this mean?
 Best Practice implementation of management plans

Ileo-anal pouch formation is now viewed as the operation of choice for
individuals suffering with Ulcerative Colitis or Familial Adenomatous Polyposis.
This workshop will explore pre and post-operative information required by an
individual to enable them to adapt to this life changing surgery. The workshop
will also highlight certain lifestyle issues, as well providing a troubleshooting
section focusing on peri-anal skin care and treatments of pouchitis.

Challenges and Opportunities in Maintaining Skin Integrity in Ostomy Management
Peristomal skin integrity is the cornerstone of stoma care. Yet, the prevalence of peristomal skin complications is high, leading to clinical
challenges and impacting patients’ post-surgery adjustment and quality of life. This symposium will present the scope of peristomal skin issues
amongst ostomates and discuss the importance and clinical impact of using a standardised tool to assess skin. It will also review clinical strategies
to optimise peristomal skin integrity, including recent findings from a multi-centre observational study.

Clinical Evidence in Stoma Care – A Symbiotic Relationship
The Hollister Breakfast Symposium will review the clinical evidence
available in stoma care and how the roles of the Stomal Therapy
Nurse and the ostomy product manufacturer are intertwined. Julia
Kittscha, Stomal Therapist from Wollongong Hospital & Stacy
Haddad, Senior Specialist Clinical Research, Hollister Incorporated,
will demonstrate i) how to interpret the clinical evidence presented
utilising relevant published examples, ii) the value in understanding
the differing hierarchies of evidence in ostomy care, and iii) how you
might become involved. Please join us for this informative and
interesting session. We look forward to seeing you there.

Smith & Nephew Breakfast Symposium
Hall C
The Smith & Nephew breakfast session speakers will present
information about the human and economic cost of wounds, providing
context and case examples relevant to patients with wounds, the
clinicians who care for them and the institutions which fund their care.
Lisa Connolly presenting ‘Can you teach an old dog new tricks’
highlights how we all get very comfortable with what we know and
trust. When an alternative system is placed in front of us, what does it
take to change our thinking? This presentation is the story of
implementing a change management program and what we have
learnt along the way.
Terri Antonio will discuss ‘Standard 8: Preventing and Managing
Pressure Injuries’ and how it involves clinical leaders and senior
managers of the health service organisation implementing evidencebased systems to prevent pressure injuries and manage them when
they do occur. It is ‘make or break’ time and Terri will share with you
how the Ballarat Health Service was able to redefine its wound care
program, and how, in keeping the patient as the central focus at all
times, the overall organisational performance and economic benefits
were enhanced.
