Part 1: How Big Are Cells?
Cells are the building blocks of living things and they are very small. But, not all cells are the
same size. Go to the website: http://www.cellsalive.com/howbig.htm. Scroll down & click “start
the animation”. Go through the animation. Roll over the names on the right to see what each
thing looks like in the model.
 What can be seen at 100x magnification?
_______________ & _______________
 Put the following in order from largest to smallest:
Red Blood Cell, Baker’s Yeast, Ragweed Pollen, Lymphocyte
 The Staphylococcus bacterium is the smallest cell in the animation. What two things in the
animation are smaller than a cell?
Part 2: Cell Organelles
Now look at the links on the left hand side of the screen. Choose the one that says “Cell
Models”. Click “Take me to the Animation”. Then scroll down and select “Animal Cell.”
 Label the following cell organelles on the drawing below: Nucleus, Cell Membrane, Rough
Endoplasmic Reticulum, Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum, Golgi Apparatus, Lysosome,
Cystosol, Centrosome, Ribosomes, and Mitochondria.
Animal Cell Diagram:
 Click on each organelle and read the summary about it. Then write a brief two sentence
synopsis (summary) of its function (job) in a cell:
Nucleus -
Cell Membrane -
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum -
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum -
Golgi Apparatus -
Lysosome -
Cystosol -
Centrosome -
Ribosomes Mitochondria –
 Now click on “Plant Cell”. Three organelles are much more prominent in plant cells. List
them below and briefly describe each.
1.
2.
3.
Two of these are never found in animal cells. Which one is? ______________________
Part 3: Live Cell Cam
Now choose the link on the left hand side that says “Cell Cams.” Explore the two web cams by
jumping to intermediate frames using the +1,+5,+20 buttons. Describe at least two differences
you notice between the cancer cells and the bacterial cells.
