Unit Standard 16553 v2 – Level Three
Make a significant contribution to a music performance ensemble
Enclosed are a task, assessment schedule and a log book template for teachers to use.
We have groups rehearsing all the time for various events and assessments and this standard
can enable those students that give their time and energy to an ensemble to gain credit for their
hard work.
I use this with all groups at Level 3 and at the end of each rehearsal they sit and write up their
log book for the session. I can add notes to their books when they contribute something special
or are working hard towards a goal. I video all performances and some rehearsals for evidence.
The task covers all the ideas for teaching each aspect, with examples of how to show students
good skills.
The log book is designed so you can copy enough internal pages for at least 25 rehearsals and at
least 3 performances as you require.
Please read these in conjunction with the actual standard so you get a good idea of what it’s all
about!

If you are credited with this unit standard you will show that you are able to
make a significant contribution to a music performance ensemble in terms of
its musical preparation, organisation, and live performance.
Assessment Tasks
1.
Preparation
Make a significant contribution to the musical preparation of a music performance ensemble.
The written comments in your log book showing examples of your contribution will be used to assess this
aspect. For example: “I suggested we should change the ending to include some of the chorus lyrics – we tried
it and it worked!”
Questions I have about this aspect:
________________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________________
1.1
Your contribution should provide musical support to the other members of your ensemble. You
should be able to lead the group, mentor others and assist the other members of your group.
1.2
Your contribution should assist with musical interpretation of the ensemble’s performance
repertoire in at least three pieces.
1.3

NOTES
1. To achieve credit for this unit standard, you are required to be an active performing member of a music
performance ensemble. An indication of the performance standard required would normally involve
attendance at the equivalent of a minimum of 25 rehearsals of the same music ensemble.
2. You need to participate as a performing member of that music ensemble in at least three performances
before an audience.
3. Performance may be on any instrument, including voice, or more than one instrument.
4. An accompanist may seek credit for this unit standard if the ensemble you accompany comprises three
or more members.
2.
Rehearsals
Make a significant contribution to the organisation of a music performance ensemble in at least three
rehearsal situations. This will be assessed using the written comments in your log book showing examples
of your support and positive behaviours which will also be shown in the video evidence of rehearsals. For
example: “I set up the PA for our performance and put out all the music stands in the correct places.”
Questions I have about this aspect:
________________________________________________________________________________
_________________________________________________________________________________________
2.1
You should support leaders and managers of your ensemble before, during and after performances.
2.2
You should display positive behaviours in rehearsal situations. This means you need to be reliable,
punctual, diligent, prepared and responsive.
2.3
Your contribution encourages and supports other members of ensemble in pursuit of agreed goals.


You should work consistently on technique and tone colour associated with your instrument, so that
you can produce a controlled performance.
Check that your instrument is capable of producing the quality of sound that is appropriate and that
it is in good working order.
Rehearse your pieces fully before rehearsals so you can play your part.
Know what is required to set up and pack up a performance so you can support others in this area.
Keep your log book up to date. You must get this signed for proof of attendance.

3. Performance
Make a significant contribution to the music performance ensemble in at least three live performances before an
audience. This will be assessed using the written comments in your log book showing examples of your
positive behaviours and by video evidence of performances. For example: “I was fully prepared for practise
today because I had learnt the lyrics and could sing them without looking at my song sheet.”
Questions I have about this aspect:
________________________________________________________________________________
_________________________________________________________________________________________
3.1
Your contribution should show positive behaviours prior to, and during, performance.
These behaviours include commitment, focus, preparedness, mental and musical readiness and
application.
3.2
Your individual performance should enhance the overall impact of the ensemble performance.
