AP US History Chapter 29 KT pg. 775-786 Catherine Phamduy 3/16/11 GI Bill (776)- because the economy was doing well and the GD ended, this bill was passed in order to provide economic and educational assistance to veterans, which would increase the spending and keep money circulating. Postwar Labor Unrest (776)- after the war brought a raise in labor unrest. There were many union strikes that would stop industries if Truman had not stepped in and ordered them to stop. It was mostly due to the inflation that unions were upset. Truman’s Fair Deal (776)- it was the plan for expansion of the Social Security benefits. However, like the New Deal, it was attacked by conservatism, and the Republican Part won control of both houses. Taft-Hartley Act (777)- it was passed by the Republicans to make the action of joining a union before applying to a job illegal. This made things hard for little unions and harder for people to join unions. Democratic Defections (778)- the democratic party was split in two where one formed the State’s Rights Party and were angry to Truman’s proposed civil rights. The other part of the remaining Democrats reluctantly nominated Truman the candidate again. Truman’s Surprising Victory (778)- Truman was able to win to presidency in 1948 by a slim margin in popular vote, yet was also able to regain control over the two houses. Truman Stymied (778)- thought Truman had very important victories; he was not able to do much on health and educational aid. He was also not able to help African Americans and fight against discrimination. Conflicting Views of Nuclear Power (779)- it was viewed with fear, yet looked with awe and great expectations as well. Some people liked it because of its new technology, while others feared that it would result with the atomic war with the USSR. Promise of Cheap Nuclear Power (779)- many people wanted and supported the idea of nuclear power used as energy. They were not worried about bombs. Syngman Rhee (780)- he was the governor of South Korea, which was the pro western nation. He was nominally democratic, yet he had little defense, which was only used for internal problems. He was south of the strong North Korea, which was heavily equipped with USSR weapons and an army. “Liberation” (780)- Truman wanted to unify Korea into one independent Democratic country. Truman-MacArthur Controversy (781)- MacArthur, who was the commander of the Americans forces in Korea, wanted to attack China as well, yet Truman denied him permission. So he sent a letter telling his objections, which was later published for everyone to see, and Truman fired MacArthur. War Economic Regulation (782)- an Office of Defense Mobilization was created in order to prevent inflation. Yet this was ineffective and created more problems with labor unions. The US’s ineffectiveness greatly angered the Americans because they had just won a great war, yet couldn’t get a minor border skirmish done. Sources of the Red Scare (782)- Americans feared communism because of the threat of atomic bombs, the loss of China, and the stalemate of Korea. Alger Hiss (782)- this young liberal democrat was accused of infiltrating the government papers and passing information to the Soviet Union. He was then sent to jail for a couple of years, yet this incident had caused suspicion for the next generation of young liberal Democrats and the idea that communists infiltrated the government. The McCarran Internal Security Act (783)- it was to investigate all communist groups so to see that they did not help the USSR in any way. Though Truman tried to veto it, Congress easily overrode him. Anticommunist Hysteria (783)- this fear of communism had gripped almost every American in the country. It was so strong that it created a very important leader. At that time, everyone was suspicious and put under fear. McCarthyism’s Appeal (784)- Joseph McCarthy raised fear of communism over people and made the Democrats seem like the criminals. Dwight Eisenhower (785)- he was the Republican candidate for the election of 1952. He promised to clean up the government of the Democrats who only corrupted the nation. He easily won the election and both the houses of congress.
