Class 8: Antonyms, Synonyms, & Homonyms
Antonyms
Antonyms are words that mean the opposite of another word.
For example, an antonym of “good” is “bad”. An antonym for “happy” is “sad”.
Synonyms
Synonyms are words that mean the same thing as another word.
For example, a synonym for “difficult” is “hard”. A synonym for “big” is “huge”.
Homonyms
Homonym is the umbrella term for words with the same spelling or pronunciation, but with different
meanings. There are 2 kinds of homonyms:
1.) Homophones – two words that sound the same, and may or may not be spelled differently, but
have different meanings.
Eg. sale  sail
red  read meat  meet
(dollar) bill  (duck) bill
2.) Homographs – two words that are spelled the same, and may or may not be pronounced
differently, but have different meanings.
Eg. (dog) bark  (tree) bark park (the car)  park (a playground)
bear (animal)  bear (withstand)
