I have recently become aware of the suffering that pigs, in particular breeding female pigs, endure on factory farms in Australia.
I am appalled.
Denying intelligent animals like pigs the means to satisfy their natural behaviours is cruel in the extreme. That causing physical
and psychological suffering to animals is legal in the 21st century shames us all and I want no part of it. As a consumer, there can
be no justification for confining pregnant pigs so severely that they cannot even turn around, and denying them any quality of
life. This terrible method of farming continues only because these animal factories have a market for their products.
Most consumers are unaware of the cruelty that lies behind ham, bacon and pork products that your company purchases and then
supplies to the general public. They would be horrified to know that they have unwittingly been supporting animal cruelty by
purchasing these products from you.
Those who operate factory farms are protected from being prosecuted for cruelty by an industry code of practice. They should
not be. Were they to treat a dog or cat in this manner they would rightfully be prosecuted.
I am aware that the support of your supermarket financially underpins the operations of these facilities - and therefore supports
the cruelty that animals endure within their walls. It is therefore within your power to end their suffering.
I implore you to take an ethical stand that will be applauded by your customers and refuse to purchase and supply factory-farmed
pork, bacon and ham products. It is within your power to end the miserable existence provided to hundreds of thousands of
animals each year.
