The Channel Islands were originally formed by volcanic activity approximately 14 million years ago, and moved to their present location and form by plate tectonics and rising and lowering sea levels. Reworked volcanic deposits (created into mineral pieces called rocks), shells (rock mineral), lava rocks, and different colored sea rocks (washed up on the sand).
