This unit will cover the period in European history known as the Renaissance. During this
period, Europe experienced a rebirth of knowledge, art, and exploration as well as a turbulent
challenge to the authority of the Catholic Church. This is your study guide and it lists the
content that will be covered in the unit.
Goals

The Philadelphia Art Museum is undergoing renovations and only
a few pieces of art can be seen by the public. Your task is to
choose three pieces of art / sculpture that would well represent
the style and attitude of the Renaissance. Your choices should
show a wide range of styles, characteristics, and subjects.
Requirements:
 Create a title for your gallery
 Choose three different artists
 Research one piece for each of your three artists for your
gallery
 The gallery should fit on a 1/2 sheet of poster board
 YOU MUST HAVE A BIBLIOGRAPHY ENTRY FOR WHERE YOU
FOUND YOUR INFORMATION FOR EACH ARTIST
 DO NOT choose a piece that we discussed in class!
 All three examples should include the following:
1. The artist’s name and a brief biography (3
sentences)
2. Title of the work
3. A brief description of the work (2-3 sentences)
4. An explanation for why you chose it and how it
represents the Renaissance art style and spirit
(Does it use classical images, portraits or religious
themes? How are the figures represented? Are
they realistic? Is perspective used?)
