TITLE OF POST: Post Doctoral Researcher in Cereal-Derived Ingredients
LOCATION: University of Limerick
REPORTS TO: Project Leader
CONTRACT TYPE: Specific Purpose
SALARY SCALE: €33,795 p.a.
JOB DESCRIPTION
QUALIFICATIONS:


BSc in a cognate area.
PhD in protein/peptide chemistry/biochemistry, food chemistry, nutritional sciences, biotechnology
and/or a closely related discipline.
OVERALL PURPOSE OF THE JOB:
The position relates to a Food Institutional Research Measure-funded project studying antioxidant and
anti-inflammatory brewers’ spent grain ingredients. The Post Doctoral Researcher will be involved in the
generation, characterisation and application of polyphenolic and barley protein hydrolysate ingredients
having the above properties.
The Post Doctoral Researcher will carry out laboratory research on the above objectives and will
contribute to the day-to-day management of the project. Collaborative interactions will involve academic
and industrial partners.
Research
 Contribute to the research programme of the Department under general guidance of a member of
the academic staff or Principal Investigator/Project Leader.
 Define research objectives and proposals for own (or joint) research in line with research strategy.
 Conduct individual and/or collaborative laboratory research projects.
 Determine appropriate methodologies for research, with advice and support as appropriate.
 Assess research findings for the need/scope for further investigations/commercial exploitation.
 Translate knowledge of advances in the subject area into research activity.
Research Management
 Plan, co-ordinate and implement research project (this may include managing a small research
team/coordinating other researcher activity).
 Manage own personal and research resources (including where required, laboratories, and
specialist equipment) appropriately.
 Manage own research budget, if any, and keep records as directed and in line with
Funder/University policy as appropriate.
Income Generation/Funding
 May identify sources of funding and pursue the process of securing funds.
 May work with Principal Investigator to contribute to proposals for developmental purposes.
Research Outputs - Write Up and Dissemination
 Write up results from own research activity.
 Contribute to the research project’s dissemination, in whatever form (report, papers, chapters,
book)
Job description


Present information on research progress and outcomes e.g. to bodies supervising research;
conferences, steering groups; other team members, as agreed with the Principal
Investigator/Project Leader.
Where appropriate, work with Principal Investigator to register patents to protect intellectual
property.
DESCRIPTION:
Essential Criteria:
Applicants must have the following:







BSc in a cognate area.
A PhD in protein/peptide chemistry/biochemistry, food chemistry, nutritional sciences,
biotechnology and/or a closely related discipline.
A demonstrated skill set in food ingredients (antioxidant and peptide) research.
Post-graduation experience in a relevant area.
A demonstrated track record of peer reviewed publication.
Excellent communication (both oral and written) skills.
Capability of working independently.
Desirable Criteria:
Applicants should ideally also have:




Demonstrated experience in project management.
Experience in working in or with industry partners.
Experience with formulating cereal-derived ingredients for human trials.
Experience in semi-pilot scale ingredient manufacture.
