Course Description: This course is intended for pharmacy students of the second year level along with biochemistry (1) lectures and it consists of experiments consisting of basic skills and methods in biochemistry beside experiments involving techniques of distingushing, identification and quantitation of biomolecules such as amino acids, proteins, enzymes, crabohydrates and lipid. Intended Learning Outcomes After studying this course the student should be able to: Successful completion of this course should lead to the following learning outcomes : 1- Students should be able to follow the saftey procedures and lab instruction. 2- Student should be able to identify and effeciently use the glasswares and equipments used in the lab and differeniate between accuracy and percision. 3- Students should understand the concept of pKa values of acids and how to practically determine its value. 4- Students should understand the concept of buffer solution and their preparation using the Hendersson-Haselbach equation. 5- Student should be able to perform the different qualitative tests used for identification of different amino acids. 6- Students should understand the concept of thin layer chromatography in seperation of molecules and perform it in the seperation of a mixure of amino acids. 7- Studnets should perform and understand some of the technigues used in the seperation of protiens such as salting out and isoelectric point precipitation, and study the different factors that affect the structure of proteins. 1 8- Students should be able to perform an experiment to measure the activity of an enzyme and study the effect of several factors on enzyme activity. 9- Students should perform tests to identify different carbohydrates including: monosaccharides, disaccharides and polysaccharides. 10- Students should perform experiments on the chemical proporties of lipid such as solubility, saponification and acid value.
